Dear 2 degrees.
When shall you be implementing worry free data on prepay? I ask because i had the unfortunate experience of over $40 credit being wasted on casual data when my 12GB MBB pack ran out recently. As my sim  is in a mifi I did not receive texts in a timely manner. [fact]  using up all my credit on casual  data is unethical. Casual data should be an opt in thing. Salty can you please change the system so when data pack runs out,  data stops? It would be much better to know when it's time to top up in order to buy a new pack, before the credit all disappears.  Please sort this out. Thanks

Isn't that an option anyway?  Just ring and ask them to set that up for you.  I am pretty sure when we signed up my son on 2deg we asked to have the data stop once the pre-pay pack was used up as opposed to chewing through any credit.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

No. By default you can't use casual data if you have a MBB pack but go out of 2D coverage, but that is different from what the OP poster requested.

Scuwp is correct. At the moment it is only available to be set in a very inconvenient place that requires escalation up to tier 2 support or higher. But it is there.

Can this be remedied? It would be far better if you had to go through two tiers of support to turn casual data on, than the current setup. I'm not very good at communicating my displeasure, 2degrees systems have failed me twice recently, where out of zone data also was incorrectly cosumed. Any perceived savings have been well and truly negated due to technical glitches. I'm looking at the skinny data sims from harvey norman, where when the pack has expired, data stops. Simple

Were you roaming on Vodafone inside a 2degrees coverage area? If you make heavy use of the zone packs then you would probably do better to lock the zone pack using device(s) to 2degrees. I'm sure there will be instructions for most devices around the place; it's not a new or secret problem.

Or are you suggesting that whilst in 2degrees coverage, and attached to the 2degrees network, your device used national data instead of zone data? I would be very interested to see an example of that.

I actually don't know if i was roaming or what. I was travelling from welly to palmy a month ago and posted about it in this thread [url]http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=90604[url\] but got no response.

If i could trust 2degrees I'd leave credit on my account. But it disappears indiscriminately.

Irrelevant but I know on Skinny, Data overage charges do not exist, Once you've used your data it stops until you buy more

Sorry if we didn't get back to you on the above thread, however we don't have the ability (yet) to prevent your Prepay credit being taken if your Value Pack data runs out.  We try to let customers know by text when they're running low but as mentioned before we cannot guarantee delivery and advise customers to keep a close eye on their balances regularly and before they connect.

There's a few options to do that -

Your 2degrees
*100*1#
Our mobile app

Or call 200 from your 2degrees phone or 0800 022022 from another phone to speak to Care.

Perhaps set a Data usage limit on your phone and turn off Mobile data off when not in use to prevent any unwanted leakage.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

It would be good to see this ability provided in the future. I understand responsibility lies entirely with the end user, but it does seem to bite a few people.

My sob story: I flashed a nightly updated to Cyanogenmod last week and forgot to disable automatic app updates, having wiped system data. Ate through the remainder of my data allowance and all my prepay credit in under half an hour and never received a text/notificaiton of low data. All it takes is a moment of forgetfulness in the data hungry era.

The upside for 2degrees is I considered buying more data, but thought I'd better try living without it to teach myself a more memorable lesson :p

It will be even quicker now that 4G is becoming available.

We really need 2 Degrees to come up with a solution on this one.  While it is ultimately up to the end user to control their data usage the reality is that we just don't have the tools to do it effectively and it has to be done in the Telco's systems.

Being faced with the same situation as the OP I have dealt with it this way by having both the 2 degrees app and the 2 degrees toolbox app on my Android phone. The app is used to monitor my phone connection and top up the phone and mifi. The 2 degrees toolbox is used solely to monitor data on the mifi. I wouldn't top up using the toolbox app because its in a different device but have found no issue using the app to top up different devices.

If no data is available from the sharer and they have credit does it use their credit for casual data?

I think that you can only share data from on account, and all on account plans have worry free data, so the answer should be no.
