I've seemed to have come across a random fault over the last few days and 2Degrees didn't seem to what to acknowledge as a possible fault.

Background: I do some work for a company of about 50+ and they mostly run iPhones 5/5s. On Saturday they it appears that their Office365 Exchange accounts stopped working when access via 2degree's mobile data. Connected to WiFi would work fine. Now I would this was a random fault if on 1 or 2 iPhones but so far were up to 8+ users.

If we use these phones to connect via personal hotspot, the fault seem to replicate in Outlook for Mac... I have also tested connecting to my Vodafone  connected iPhone and it works fine. To further test this, while on 2degree's hotspot, changing the DNS from 2degrees (phone provided) to say Google's DNS then Outlook will then connect.

I have tested a couple of different Office365 exchange accounts and all end with the same fault.

Has anyone else run into this?
It appears that most other mail providers, GMail, iCloud etc are still working fine.

Not directly related, but one of my customers who moved from Vodafone to 2degrees can no longer VPN with iPhone personal hotspot. Maybe 2degrees data is doing some weird things with some services.

there was an NZNOG post about unusually large DNS replies from outlook.office365.com on Friday... probably related to your issue.

Since Friday, none of our staff have been able to retrieve mail while on mobile data.

The same phones connected to a wireless network work fine. The issue seems to be that the domain outlook.office365.com is not resolvable when connected to the 2Degrees mobile data network.

This problem has been in play since Friday, and may be due to the DNS query results for outlook.office365.com exceeding a size limit that may be defined on your security devices, or DNS servers. Or possibly due to the size of the query exceeding 512 bytes DNS may be failing back to TCP which may not be permitted.

Would appreciate this being investigated by the technical team – it is no doubt affecting a significant number of business customers using Office365.

Above poster mentioning the NZNOG/DNS related comment is correct.

I sent the above this morning (after calling them was a failure) to their business support, and a couple of technical people inside the organisation.

I've had one response saying:
Talked to the tech guys
It's not us
This has been looked at already and there have been heaps it's effected
I was told it's a Microsoft issue they need to sort out an update

Which is wrong, but I guess it'll take time for it to reach someone with the right level of clue.

If you have issues with VPNs while using mobile data, try switching to the APN 'direct'.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

These comments are my own and do not represent the opinions of 2degrees.

Which is fine for a half technical person; but alas some of my customers are not even 1/4 technical :(

Hi,

This is being worked on. There is a short term fix in at the moment that has hopefully resolved it for most people #crossingfingers. Another fix will go in tonight.
As most people have commented, it is a DNS issue we are resolving at the moment.
We are trying to get it fixed as soon as possible.

I found using PPTP on 2Degrees the "internet" APN better.

Sounds like a lot of remote access VPN terminators could do with having NAT-T support turned on.
