Went into 2degrees store yesterday.

Was told can only buy iphone 6 or + with monthly plan. Not buy it outright.

Was also told to try Dick Smiths.

Dick Smiths told me they can only sell the white 16 GB iphone 6 $999. I'd prefer the 64GB one.

Checked the apple store and looks like I can buy unlocked iphone 6's out right, 3 to 5 days shipping.

What the hecks going on here???

Why I'd prefer to buy in shop is so I can have my existing sim number transfered to an iphone one, have ipod touch and find I use applics on that a lot more then my up to 5 year old android phone, but screen on ipod touch slightly to small.

No wonder bricks and mortatar shops finding it so tough to sell stuff, when you walk in with the cash and they tell you, they're not allowed to sell it to you outright, where online it can be brought outright!!!

IMHO when it comes to purchasing Apple products I find it best to go straight to the source and purchase it through the Apple Store online. I learned long ago that retailers just don't get it - complaining that they don't get customers but fail to hold stock in the store and then tell me "oh, it'll only take 2-3 to get it to the store" as if they couldn't quite understand that I could purchase online cheaper and wait the same 2-3 days with money saved in the process. At this point when it comes to purchasing anything, unless I need it straight away I'll always opt to purchase it online.

i bought an iphone 6 for the misses a couple of weeks ago on a wednesday, it arrived that same week on friday

You'll find that a store not having stock is not the retailers fault. Apple dictate the stock and prefer to understock. Regardless of the carrier.

As a retailer with Apple there is no negotiation - you get what you are given and should be thankful of it.

You'l find it is part telco, part retailer and part Apple as the problem - it is a Mexican standoff whereby revenue protection is one of the drivers behind such behaviour.

- Telcos won't sell you outright because the very same device could be panned off to a person who probably shouldn't/couldn't afford a smartphone with an attached 'sell-your-soul' contract term to them for fiscal reporting. In fact, personal relationships and jobs are to likely end before the contract is up for renewal.

- Retailers get stock from Apple and the Margin % is likely higher by selling the more readily available 16gb models

- Also Apple does not trust the Telcos to sell the product and handle product launches

The end result is the consumer ends up with the bad experience or worse, with a competitor device.

The stupid thing is that I preordered from Spark (64 GB 6) with no contract and got the phone on launch day. Yet here we are, almost three months later, and there are delays and contracts all over the place.

If I buy from apple store how do I get the phone set up?

I went through to the apple login id screen, but no where in the ordering process does it ask what carrier you're with?

Does a blank nano sim come with phone?, as I want to move existing 2degrees number to it.

Shops do have phones in stock, just they'll only sell on a pay monthly plan and 2 year contract, so they may make more money per sale that way, but they get nothing from me.

Also I'd probably use more data then using now, so 2degrees is missing out on increased revenue.

I waited a few months on the ipad2 and had no problem buying that a shops, you'd think a long enough time would've passed for the iphone6.

Apple doesn't need to know who you're with as the same model works with all providers. It doesn't come with a SIM; you just pop in your existing nano SIM if you have one, otherwise you'll need to contact 2D to get a new nano SIM.

Bought the wife an iPhone 6+ at the Apple Store last week, arrived this morning.

Just avoid the telcos and buy direct from Apple. The CGA will also still apply.

As above, there's no difference here than switching between any model of phone, and no matter where it was purchased (in-store, online, o/s...). If you don't already have a nano SIM I believe you'll need to go into a 2 Degrees store as they'll need to load your current number on the new SIM. This is certainly how I managed it when switching from standard to micro SIM.

I was trying to get an iPhone 6 plus by asking all the retailers early November, but they all were selling contract only phones, I was happy with my current contract, so...

I really wanted to upgrade my tired 4S, so I went online, to Apple and just bought a 64 GB model and had it within three weeks.
I believe the wait time is much shorter now.

I have purchased a 4S, iPad 2, iPad Mini and now a iPhone 6 Plus through the Apple online store. I have no regrets, in fact the one issue I did have with my 4S they resolved within 3 days (hardware fault I caused).

My 6 Plus arrive, I took it to Vodafone and they upgraded my sim, and within minutes I was using the new phone.

Love the 6 Plus, yes it's big, but I don't notice the size anymore, but handling the old 4S to set it up as an iPod for the kids feels really small now.

If you want a new iOS device and you don't want to change plans, just visit Apple online.

When you order a phone direct from Apple the phone will be unlocked and able to work with any NZ carrier (2degrees, Vodafone, Spark) etc - The technologies in NZ all work with the model of iPhone sold here unlike for example the US.

What you'll need to do is pop down to 2degrees and tell them you are going to be upgrading to a iPhone 6, and they should be able to give you a simcard that has multiple sim sizes (nano, micro). They'll port your number to your new simcard and get that set up. You can then pop that into your existing phone to use in the meantime. Once your new iPhone arrives you can then take out the sim card, and 'pop out' the nano sim and jut put it into you new phone.. you'll be set up and running again in no time.

If you need contacts, then the easiest way will be to copy the contacts off your old phone to the new sim and then re-import them on your new iphone, but if you have full contact information sim cards only handle basic contact info, so you will lose everything else. Otherwise you should be able to export online and import to the new phone via. the web (someone else might be able to advise more on this as I've had iPhones ever since my first 4S and just backed up and restored to my new phone, which has kept all my data intact)

I have set up a Google account and have all my contacts on that.
I also have multiple calendars there as well, so when I move to a new phone, I simply add my google account to the phone and all my contacts appear within seconds.
I also have my calendars and contacts being backed up on icloud - makes things easy.
My sim holds nothing other than my phone account info.
Remember that the sim is easy to read data off (unless you lock it) so if you loose your phone, that data is accessible even if you wipe the phone remotely.

Cheers for the answers.

Now I've just got to decide between the 6 and 6+,

6+ would be nicer, but not sure how comfortable it'd be in pocket. I don't make hardly any voice calls, so stuff I do will mainly be looking at the screen.

Cool tip about getting sim coverter, so can use in current phone. I only have names and numbers in contacts stored in phone so exporting info to sim will be ideal.

Similar story here, I went to 2drgrees then JB hifi. t
The guy in JB hifi was a bit arrogant too, telling me I would have no chance of getting an outright one anywhere on this side of Christmas.
I wasn't prepared to waste my breath with him so I went home and ordered one from apple store.
