Lodged a support ticket with Orcon that Forwarded mail (even to myself as a test) wasn't arriving ...  although sending new emails is OK.

They replied

>From your email I understand you are requesting assistance on your email bounce back.

I have checked our database and still there are some spam, malware, spyware etc. in your email.  That is the main reason why your email keeps bouncing back due to bad reputation of your email and IP address.

Please erase them and if possible run an anti-spam, malware and spyware to be cleaned.

What does this actually mean ?  What's the hell is this "bad Reputation" all about ??  That's a bit insulting isn't it ? How could my IP earn that ?

Nothing bounces back, they just fail to arrive.

I have AVG and a paid-for "Super Anti-Spyware" installed  and run regular scans etc. which reports all is OK or supposedly removes any dodgy stuff.

There's no spam, malware, spyware in my inbox, and even if there was how would that effect forwarding a email ?
In webmail there's 65 old messages in the Sent folder, is this what he's referring to ?

I certainly wouldn't rate this as very professional or polite (or even helpful)  response to a fairly important fault.
It was only because I was forwarding something to my wife to read on her PC that I found out it wasn't working.

Well, its not as rude as sending malicious mail or passing on an "infection" with or without your knowledge of doing so. You'll probably find this article useful.

In my experience, I don't particularly find AVG any good, paid or free. It just misses stuff I tend to find. So while your inbox might be free of anything, can you say with 99% certainty that there is nothing on your computer or any computer/ device that has or is in previous connected to your Broadband/ UFB? Keeping in mind too, that this might not have been you as the article mentioned. If you're not leasing a static IP from Orcon, you will be getting an IP address from a pool of them, it could be you just grabbed another one for whatever reason, of which there are several, and that had a bad reputation because of a previous user. I don't know sorry, that will be up to you and your ISP to investigate.

IF you have virus (using that word in a generic term for anything that has infiltrated your machine or any on your network) on there and you're unknowingly participating in something i.e. botnet or otherwise, you guessed it. That piece of software IS using your IP to get out, and will be affecting your reputation. That is generally how it gets a bad reputation.

Also just my personal opinion, if you're going to pay for anti-virus protection, NOD ESET it by far the best that I have tried, also it is what my employer uses too.

Seeing as you have run into this problem, I would say it is time to check your security, and possibly consider changing or upping it. I'm not just talking about the PC mentioned that has AVG, and super anti spy-ware. I'm talking about any device that connects to you connection via either Wi-Fi or cable.

Regarding you IP reputation, you're going to have to raise that with the ISP, in this case Orcon, as they own the subnet range which you will have been allocated. Unless, you have leased a static IP from them, in which case, it is my understanding that under those arrangements the customer who is leasing the IP needs to maintain the reputation of the IP. Could easily be proven wrong there though

What did you actually complain about to Orcon?
- Emails you send did not get to someone else?
- You are getting bounce backs as someone is joe-jobing you (Sending you from email address and you get the bounce backs)  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_job
- Or what?

I would have expected your ISP to have a better handle on grammar and how to construct a sentence if that's a direct cut and paste.
You sure that reply is from Orcon?

Hi There

Do you have a ticket number for this?  It does sound a bit strange if it is in reference to a normal (ie. standard residential type) mail setup.

Either way, please PM me your details so I can look into what's happened here :)

Regards

Dan

I'm sure that response is from Orcon as it's a reply to my fault report, and has a case ID.  FlameBeard, thanks for the rundown, I do have a static IP but had no idea it earned any kind of reputation, good or bad.  Just who is deciding this, unbeknown to the user, and on what grounds?

I've done nothing I know of to cause this and in any case why would it affect only mail forwarded from one Orcon address to another Orcon address? (That's the situation, LennonNZ).
So far there's been about six of them... vanished into thin air. So, where are they, Orcon ?

As for maintaining one's IPs reputation - I'm gobsmacked. How the hell do you do that?  I'm somewhat computer literate and never heard of such a thing.

But as Dan has invited a PM, I will do so. But I'm pi**ed off majorly, I'm sorry to say.

Anti-Spam agencies, blacklist agencies etc etc, You will probably find this of interest for how "the big four" handle email and judge if it is bad news or not. Also you can use mxtoolbox.com to see if you have landed on any spamhaus or anti-spam sites.

All the anti spam filtering lists are based on reports of users. Last few I have had dealing with where a businesses static IP ended up in them were as a result of people at the business sending "helpful" emails to people that were getting marked as spam by the recipiants because they basically were.

Husbands working from home isnt trying to get sales leads etc is it?

Flamebeard, I tried http://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx and got

Checking ... against 88 known blacklists...
Listed 0 times with 1 timeouts

I'm sure that guy at Orcon must have been on something.... since then Dan has found the missing emails (they had gone into Orcons 'Mail Guard") and all seems good again.
LOL I shall consider my reputation is intact !

Glad to hear it. If your curiosity ever peaks like mine, I run something like this infrequently just to check. Especially useful if you have a static IP.
