Is anyone else seeing these problems or is it just me?

Looking here, it appear that I'm using the correct DNS server ip addresses.
The problem seems to affect just a few domains - at least twitter.com and perhaps others.

My mobile can find twitter.com using vodafone 3G/4G and I can find twitter.com on Orcon DSL if I change the dns server.

I'd expect that others will find the same problem for twitter.com, but it would be good to have it verified.

Edit: fixed a lot of typos.

Yeah, same problem here. Was fine switching to google DNS servers, 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4. Previously also unable to access github.

I reported it to Orcon using the web form just a couple of minutes ago.
Will update when/if I hear anything back.

Can confirm github.com is also not working with Orcon DNS servers, but o.k. with 8.8.8.8.

The DNS issues appear to affect Spotify as well, as the Spotify client needs access to more than just spotify.com to authenticate and connect to content. A quick check with tcpdump finds that it also requires ap.spotify.com and apresolve.spotify.com and these are unavailable from Orcon DNS servers too.

There are probably hundreds or thousands of sites affected. First thing I did was close and re-open my browser, with several windows open. Almost all of the pages stalled on some or other tracker or ad-page, if not the main site. Includes gmail. Some sites stalled, then came up after a while.

I spent 20 mins on the phone with them (after a 15 minute wait). They're getting lots of calls and emails coming in (also about the dead phone lines people are getting, including me). So hopefully they're onto it.

In the meantime it's easy enough to temporarily change your dns server.

Orcon are saying it's a DoS attack. No ETR at the moment.

You guys are really great thanks.  Same problem with Orcon here and have been searching for a solution for hours.  Should have just tried here first!  Changed to google 8.8.8.8 8.8.8.4 and all good now.  Thanks a bunch

Hi all,

First up, sorry for the trouble this evening. Can confirm this is related to a DoS attack on our name servers. Our engineers are across it and should hopefully have it sorted soon - no ETR at this stage though.

Our network status page has been updated: https://www.orcon.net.nz/network_status.

Cheers,

Cam

I seem to be getting a response for my DNS requests for those queries using the Orcon DNS servers again. Perhaps it might be worth waiting for an update from Orcon before switching back, but at least my twitter and Spotify seem to be back again.
