Hi,

Just received the NF4V for my VDSL service upgrade. Whilst tweaking the router settings I noted the firmware version and checked what was available from the manufacturer (R5B030). It appears the customized firmware included (NF4V_Slingshot-R5B015.EN) is out of date, contacted Slingshot and they weren't all that interested in explaining things but did state that the R5B015 wasn't available to download should I wish to revert back to it. I'm not fussed about the customization in regards to ADSL/VDSL connectivity but I will be transitioning to UFB with this modem in a year. I know very little regarding UFB settings in routers etc which is why I would like some advice whether I need to be worried or not about upgrading to Netcomm's firmware version.

Personally, I like to keep the router firmware up to date for bug fixes, improvements and security reasons. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

I'd ditch the netcomm and get something more decent like a dreytek, i've seen a few problems with the NF4V. One such issue was the dns proxy that kept failing, hence dns stopped resolving. I had a customer with this issue and he kept calling me when he couldn't load any websites, I ended up disabling the dns proxy and had dhcp directly assign the ISP's dns addresses directly to the clients. Not to mention when I looked on the netcomm website to see if there was a firmware upgrade to fix this issue, no updates had been released and this was only just recently too.

The DNS issue on the NF4V was fixed well over a year ago in the public release firmware. It's taken Netcomm a long time to fix it on the NF8AC though - that was only fixed a few weeks ago.

You should always use the ISP firmware if you want to have a supported device.

Sorry i'm getting myself mixed up, it is the NF8AC i'm referring to in my previous post. Dual band router. Good to know they've just fixed it. This was a router that came from PBtech, not from any ISP but was used on Spark.
