Just got my vdsl connection today, getting worse than ADSL results, rang help desk, they said they will monitor new connections for 10 days, but I am a bit skeptical about it, can anyone please shed some light on this?

The monitoring is true, but in this case I'd say that there's a fault. At a guess, the tech wired it up incorrectly.
The chorus guy did a test with his modem was getting 20mbps down and 1mbps up.
I also had a couple good results out of 20 line tests, eg, fast ping and 20mpbs down.
Well in that case, the question would be "what has changed?" Have you changed any wiring? Power-cycled the modem? Connected to a different socket?
Nope, nothing changed... apart from restarting the modem a few times.
That's likely to be your problem. Power cycling the modem multiple times will make the automatic monitoring think that you have a very unreliable line (after all, the connection keeps dropping!). It therefore goes into a "fail-safe mode" where it's using reliable - but slow - parameters. Keep the modem turned on constantly for ten days; the system will gradually increase the speed again if there are no dropouts.
20/1 sounds like a pretty marginal connection.
Post the DSL information from your modem.
the fact that you mention massive jitter, and such a low upstream ontop of the fact that your quoted upstream speeds are pretty low suggests potentially your upstream is simply congested with an upload.
Was a master filter installed?

I am seeing some speed improvement as I am typing, will report back if problem comes back.

With the increased range and looser pre-req's, we're getting a few more marginal connections. I was talking to one of my co-workers who reckoned he just put one on with 23/3 last week.
Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.
what are your modem stats?

Speaking of that, about a year ago I inquired about vdsl and they said the exchange is too far away so I couldn't get it. But I thought I might just tried again this year and surprisingly they said I could get it now.
I re-iterated to them about the answer they gave me a year ago and apparently got told it's okay.

Yep, a lot of stuff is flying now that wasn't before - used to be required that all connections to VDSL were full installs with splitters, and that the line length couldn't be more than 900m. I think the new limit is we're allowed up to 1.3Km, and you don't need a splitter install (which is nonsense, there are only a couple of houses pre-00's I've seen that have wiring good enough to not trash VDSL).

some of us with marginal lines that have already been confirmed chorus's side are still having issues getting it past isps. seems to be a bit of an issue on their side.
Marginal isnt such a bad thing, but still important to know all the variables before seriously commenting.

As my above comment, this is sounding like a congested connection at the user level rather than a fault at all.
Post the stats, if you need directions do ask, i have an orcon VDSL modem sitting at my feet i could power up and hand you exact directions.
