Had Fibre installed in Christchurch on Friday; went without a hitch. The whole process was quick and easy, no problems. The installer was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and very confident.

Install was a small 3m trench from boundary, fibre pulled about 6m under the house.

The speeds are great; a monumental increase from my previous service. As soon as the installer left there were intermittent wireless connection issues; the Slingshot provided modem/router services a laptop, Sky decoder, an iPhone 5C and a Motorola Moto G all within 15 feet of the router. We spend most of our time in the lounge, so we don’t often have any walls between the router and the devices.

Diagnosing the lost wireless connections on the laptop pointed towards not connecting to a DNS server. Sometimes the connection fixed itself, other times a restart on the computer or modem fixed the issue. Over the weekend, the connection to the laptop and my Motorola seems more stable, but there are continual disconnections with my wife’s iPhone. Her total indifference to our internet service has now changed to “WHERE THE HELL IS THE INTERNET???!!!”

My house is 200m from the cabinet down the road.

Optical light has always shown solid green, LAN1 has always been solid green and the wireless does its flickering.

All software and firmware are as up to date as they can be.

I’ve emailed Slingshot, does anyone have any suggestions?

perhaps a wipe and reset? cheap consumer modems like this one generally revert to a 'don't touch me' state after being in operation for a year or so and get really finicky if you do. It's not uncommon for someone to decide to update some setting and save only to find the flash memory has deteriorated and they are left with a brick.

Are all wireless devices affected at the same time?

Are wired devices affected at all?

Inphinity:

Only once was there no connection to the laptop and two cellphones at the same time. That was Friday evening, fresh after install.

Over the weekend the connection to my laptop seems to have been more stable; when playing online games on my laptop, my wife's connection on her iPhone would drop constantly. My Motorola phone also seems to have been more stable. It seems preposterous, but it feels like a 'bedding-in' process that is getting better (for me anyway).

I haven't extensively tested, because we don't use wired much. I tried it last night because I was "streaming from multiple peers" and it was slow but that could be down to the nature of the "streaming" I was doing (the location of the peers etc). I did a line test at the time and I was d/l at 20Mb/s (I've peaked at ~50Mb/s on Wifi when testing with technician after he connected me). The peer software had me streaming at max ~250kb/s.

What type of router?

Apple devices have absolutely terrible WiFi performance and compatibility with any brand of WiFi gear except Apple's own Airport AP's. Just search the forums of any major WiFi vendor and you'll see thousands of different threads with people who have WiFi issues with Apple gear.

Energy Imports GF1V, same chipset as Netcomm NF4V (Source: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=81&topicid=198579)

Slingshot asked me to set up a manual DNS/IP, which is what I have done.

Using Linetest:

Before:

Down 27.4 Mb/s
Up 10.3 Mb/s

After:

Down 27.4 Mb/s
Up 10.5 Mb/s

These are WiFi speed. With ethernet, there was no difference in speed.

A negligible difference. But I wasn't concerned with the speed (should I be?). Will have to check with wife when she gets home to see if her iPhone connects.
