Hi,

I am with orcon and I am with there Max download plan, but my Max download i get seems caped, (I always thought when you give someone max speed that it will go as fast as posable, but my speed cuts off at a nice number of 350KB/s :( how come it doesn't vary the whole time?

I have a DG834G Netgear router/modem which says this:

Is the "3200 kbps" the max I can go?

this is what speedtest.net gets:

Just wondering if there is anything I can do to get my speed any faster?

350KB/s (KiloBytes per second) is 2800Kbit/sec, which on a 3200Kbps sync sounds about right - allow ingfor overhead (AAL5, PPP, etc). There isn't much you can do about it except move closer to a DSLAM.

In this case, Orcon are giving you the max -- the max your line can sustain.

Unrelated to the speed question: Are Orcon returning the OpenDNS servers in their PPP configuration, or did you manually configure that?

Aah ok, well I guess I can live with the speed I have. (do you think a different router could make a difference?)

My experiments on 34 dB attenuation adsl2+ line 1. Netgear DG834G 7.5 mbps; 19 dB noise margin , 2. Linksys AM300 9.8 mbps, 3. Linksys WAG325N 11.6 mbps; 12 dB noise margin.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I have played with many routers. Netgear & Dynalinks sync slower than most (subject to variations of course). And just backed up by Spyware's post above.

Awhile ago, I got 1.8Mbps on a netgear, 2.2Mbps on a Dynalink, 2.8Mbps on a Linksys and 3Mbps on ZyXEL (on the same DSL connection of course, and obviously some variation in these speeds).

Rural IT and Broadband support.

I'm not saying you are wrong but alot depends on the router/version of firmware of router, if you are connecting at ADSL1 or 2. etc . Also the DSLAMS are quite different than the Telecom ones and might behave differently with different brands of router.

Yes, I agree there are a lot of factors here, but the above is general trends I have found over many varied connections. These figures may be closer on some connections & much more varied on others, but the trend of Netgear / Dynalink syncing at the lower end is generally applicable. On a good line close to exchange, there might not bet as much difference, but most of the lines I deal with are generally longer lines that sync at less than 4Mbps.

WOW, there have been allot of replies.

So if I do get a new router I should buy a Linksys?

Would you suggest getting one that is just for the internet, and another for the LAN?

Oh and I have herd of linux or something things you can upload to your router, and sometimes that makes it work better..?

Does anyone know if this exists for my netgear router?

I found the adsl2+ version of the 834 was much better then the adsl1 version.

Which do you have?

We're talking going from 5.5 to 9 megs.

Otherwise move, or wait for telecom to cabnitize your area.

Im on, ADSL (G.DMT)

I switched it to "adsl2+" but then it wont connect to orcon (internet doesn't work( :( so i had to go back to ADSL (G.DMT)
