Hi,

For a number of years we had Snap/2Degrees ADSL, and separately a Slingshot VoIP account. We use a standard phone, connected into an ATA port on the rear of our Vodafone router, which is configured with all the Slingshot SIP settings/servers/ports/etc.

Recently we switched ISP's to Flip. The actual changeover experience was fairly trouble-free and punctual, and our Internet overall is working fine.

However since the day of the switch we have had no VoIP line.

I have had numerous tech support calls between Slingshot and Flip (who I am led to believe are even owned by the same company) and have restarted routers, checked all the Slingshot settings multiple times. The reality is that Slingshot ceased to see any data/login attempts/etc from us on the day of the switchover.

I am convinced that Flip probably blocks Port 5060, but the technical support team at Flip has been completely unhelpful (useless!) claiming that the issue is with my VoIP provider and that I should talk to them. However they don't have any knowledge of whether or not Port 5060 is in fact blocked or open! There doesn't seem to be a huge depth of knowledge there, and I have spoken to the same people more than once so I imagine the team is small.

I am at my wits' end and my blood pressure is rising.

Do I have any further options or is there any further diagnostics I can do before I give up on Flip and go back to 2Degrees?

Thanks,

Anton

FLIP Uses CGNAT, so yes incoming port 5060 will not reach your router.

Thanks. Any options, or do I have to choose between a VOIP line and Flip?

Olafnz: do I have to choose between a VOIP line and Flip?

Pretty much. You could get phone from Flip for $5/month?

Thanks, much appreciated.

It's good to have clarity on what is going on, even if I can't get a result from the ISP!

Do Slingshot have IPv6 enabled for their VOIP yet? Easy solution?

Not yet, FLIP has not got IPV6 yet either though we will have that sorted in the new year.

I'm not aware of anybody in NZ doing VoIP over IPv6 and wouldn't expect anybody to do so anytime soon. There are lots and lots of challenges, along with such simple things as increased bandwidth requirements for calls.

You need to use a sip proxy for your voip, I would suggest you port your voip to 2talk as Slingshot voip is no longer a sold product. 2talk will work with Flip CGNAT fine as long as you use the 2talk sip proxy. Slingshot, Flip and 2talk are all Vocus brands.

Thanks all for the extra info/suggestions - it relieves the Cache 22 where I could get no progress with either provider, and was starting to feel quite stuck!

Sounddude - it sounds from your reply that you may have some involvement with Flip? If you are in a position to do so may I politely request that you have a quiet word with "Sam" - it was not so much his ignorance that offended me as much as his unhelpful rudeness and sarcastic responses over a couple of calls in the last few weeks.

I think I may go with the suggestion of the $5 Flip landline upgrade, assuming I can port my number. However I do need to check that my IP camera is still working. I imagine my Cloud device is no longer remotely accessible, but that is a minor detail compared to the camera and phone.

Thanks again,

Anton

If you have products that you set up a port forward to access then no, they're not going to work with CG-NAT.

Having said that you should never under ANY circumstances port forward something like an IP camera unless you want to have it compromised. This is incredibly bad practice - and not because people could see video (there are tens of thousands of such cameras online), but because they basically the #1 source of bots for things such as DDoS attacks.

The xmeye cloud service worked for me when I briefly tried it on a CGNAT connection, but the inherent absurdity in them passing auth requests down to a camera based on someone just knowing its cloud ID means I quickly disabled that and went for a VPN home and take the cameras off the internet solution.

I have had some sucess with voip on CGNAT when it was 2talk and a bigpipe natted connection, but there was too many failures to get calls or calls with no audio for it to be acceptable.

Woah don't put your devices directly on the net. They almost certainly will be hacked to either spy on you, scan your local network or be used for DDoS.
