So I've been back and forth with support for a week now and am back to square one, every email reply is from a different person, I've been ask for acc detail 4 times in a week between 20 email conversion, does slingshot just hire 100 tech support on minimum wages who doesn't give a *, instead of 10 good ones.

Ever since Dec 2016 on ADSL2 download speed can barely maintain 300kb/s, even after upgrading to VDSL a week ago nothing has change, where as downloading the same link on bigpipe would hit 7mb/s

Support seems to be set on pointing towards the speedtest numbers and telling me everything is normal.

The new modem (NetComm NF4V) given with the VDSL upgrade has been left on default settings.

Surely there must be some kind of throttling going on as nothing has change on my end and seeing that linetest shows the full 49mbps, but that's a ridiculously unreasonable speed to be capped at...

Sorry for the rant, am I out of option other than to pay the 200$ dc fee just a week in and find a new isp

Well the Speedtest is showing far more than 300kb/s so the line itself is probably fine. How and to where is the 300kb/s being measured?

Are you doing this over an ethernet connection or WiFi? Whjat are the modem stats? Did you have a master filter installed with VDSL?

Can you post a link to a specific download that can be used to test with? Also, how are you downloading - http, ftp etc?

Ethernet but I tested it on my surface pro wifi with the same result, and yes with the filter.

Did not fiddle with the new modem other than putting in acc and pass as I do not know much about networking, but this has been going on since the holidays on the old modem on ADSL2, hence the upgrade to VDSL just a week ago... and also the cheaper pricing...

It is simply a really slow download site - here is a test taken from within Spark on a server I have hosted there (Gigabit connection):

Note - this server can achieve almost Gigabit speeds anywhere.

Now, if I compare this with another server I have in the US I get the following:

And finally, from my home connection (BigPipe Gigabit - 4ms away from the server I have at Spark):

I don't know what is going on but something doesn't look right with the download. It does appear that it is being hosted in Sydney AWS however speeds start off strong (5mb/s on my home connection) then drop really quickly to what you're seeing. It appears they may have some rate limiting activated so that answers the question about BigPipe downloading at 7mb/s+ since it simply is not true.

Now, if we run another test we get something a little different - since I'd love to add to my server empire lets download Ubuntu from Here:

Note - these speeds were downloading to a small credit card sized Linux computer. The final test was to prove my connection but even with a download accelerator (aria2) I am still unable to break past 1mb/sec even on my Gigabit connection. The only time I saw past that was downloading via a dedicated server in the US. I don't think there is anything wrong with your connection - it is simply the download link you posted.

Furthermore the Surface does have known WiFi problems - I've blogged about it Here. The Surface Pro 4 even has the same WiFi problems with the previous generations and some are worse than others. I'd personally take your results as inconclusive until you've tested over Ethernet since my Surface Pro 3 had major issues with WiFi (I didn't capture the sub-mbit speed problems I was having at the start). See if my blog post helps you if you have one of the Surface models (2,3,4) that are affected by the dodgy WiFi chipset.

Thank you for the tests! really appreciate it, it's more than support has done for me with their copy and paste replies

if that's the case this is bizarre as download speed off peak hours (like now... 2am) is great, speed during the day is just garbage and after work hours only youtube works well, i'm assuming it's cause that's been cached

Surely somethings wrong at slingshots end or it's deliberate throttling...

Edit: the download link was just an example I tested on as it was a huge file, most websites with images during those hours fail to fully load too and often images show up as broken link

In regards to surface pro, I really only use it for art and comics, but everyone told me to test on both wifi and Ethernet.

Yes indeed. I wouldn't trust that site as a good test - test using a local source first (like the Linux link I posted) that demostrates national speed first then test to well supported sites like the Linode Speedtest servers (Here - try Fremont). I don't think there is anything wrong with your network and the Vocus group don't appear to be doing any traffic shaping. It may be one of the following:

1) Slow download site.
2) Upload congestion (for example, dropbox or somebody/something on your network doing bulk uploads).
3) Malware - test with malwarebytes to confirm.
4) WiFi - test via Ethernet.

For images failing to load this can be caused by DNS (you using a content unblocker like Getflix?) or an incorrect MTU on your router which given you're using the standard router by the looks doesn't seem to be the case.

So here are the test at 9am, no one else is using the internet atm, and no malware at least according to malwarebyte.

As the day goes on the speed will start to tank, at around 6pm it all goes to * :/

I've had to flushdns for google and sometimes youtube to show up, but manually setting up dns instead seems to have fixed it, not using Getflix or anything similar, I'm not sure what to do tbh...
