So, since we're here...

Obviously we will be conducting our own official focus group studies and marketing whatnot, but here's your chance to have your say. What would YOU like to see us doing?

I don't want to hear any "get free phone calls forever" suggestions, we're not a charity. :-) But if you have any specific ideas about what you want out of your service feel free to air them here. I can't promise we will implement any of them, ever, but I am certainly interested to hear what you're after. I have to go and figure out how to make it work on the network!

S/he made an introduction in another discussion and this is related to NZ Communications, the company previously known as Econet.

  • Cheap ($15) high cap GPRS plans (like 500MB) to allow PDAs phones to get slow email on the go without worrying about cost.
  • Prepaid data (e.g. buy a chunk of say 1 or 2GB and have no expiry on it).
  • Kill off the idea of prepay vs. account customers being any different. Reward account customers with excellent handset deals for contracts, and make all services available on both platforms at the same price (corporate or large business deals excepted of course - I am really just talking about consumer here).
  • Zero compatbility problems with SMS and MMS between networks from day 1 (this is very important). (As close to zero as poss anyway)
  • Some decent marketing to let people know 024 exists and is valid - with a new number range, many PBXs will not be able to call you unless they are updated.
  • An informative website that lays out all products and services, prices and conditions in an easy to find and easy to read format.
  • And lastly, but not leastly: Free phone calls for ever :-P

Pretty much everything that Tony said ;} He's right on the money, I especially like pre-paid data (hate that data is really only available on 021 attached to a plan).

PS: Definitely free calls forever!

Free or super-super-super-super-low calls for within same network (and if a number is roaming in overseas, the recepient only pay roaming, not the caller). If can't achieve this, at least free call in off peak for same network calling, across all customers.

An all you can use on all services for the price you want, maybe several pricing tiers and the value can be used on any combination of services, like SMS, MMS, Data, Voice etc. For example, $100 value to spend on one's heart desire. With a clear chart of how SMS, MMS, Data and Voice usage block are broken down, for accounting purposes on spending the $100 value.

Easy switching of number On-Account to Prepaid and vice versa without drama.

ABSOLUTE topnotch customer services. Train your call centre staff and counter-staff the same knowledge and train them up with absolute understanding of the products and services. Staff must absolutely know the devices/hardware and products and services well to recommend best suggestion that suit the buyer/customer.

I don't want to hear any "get free phone calls forever" suggestions, we're not a charity. :-) But if you have any specific ideas about what you want out of your service feel free to air them here.

OK, here's my 2c worth...

I believe that TNZ and VFNZ are doing a reasonable job of catering for business customers and also those with the need for Mobile Broadband.  Where the deficiency in our Mobile Phone market lies is at the bottom end i.e. the Prepay plans.

The best deal you can can get from either TNZ or VFNZ is 49c per minute for on-net calls unless you hook up with Best Mate or the new Family Plan from VFNZ.  However, the family plan only allows for 4 people per family, and ours has 5.  There must be many others in this situation.

I believe that 49c per minute is still much more expensive than it needs to be, given our market size.  At this point, all the usual suspects will jump in and say that our geography and sparse population mean that this is the cheapest sustainable rate for Mobile Phone networks in NZ.

So I would like to ask those people why it is possible for a much smaller nation such as Western Samoa to enjoy Prepaid Calling Rates which are HALF OR LESS of what we are paying in NZ.  Have a look at this page, in particular the Digicel to Digicel Anytime Flex rates:

http://www.digicelsamoa.com/tariffs/index.php?pa=digicel_flex

The Samoan Tala is worth NZ 51c at present, and was a similar value when I went there for a holiday last winter.  Converting the various rates on Digicel's web site to NZ$ gives the following comparison:

Digicel to Digicel Anytime (=VFNZ Prepaid Motormouth on-net call) 23c per minute vs. 49c per minute here

Digicel to SamoaTel Fixed line (=VFNZ to Landline call) 23c per minute vs. 49c per minute here

Outgoing SMS to anywhere (International included) 10c vs. 20c (or 80c for International SMS) here

I would like to see NZ Comms offer similarly priced Prepaid Plans here, with especially attractive deals for customers who migrate a group of their friends and family across.

If it can be done in Samoa (and many other small Pacific nations), why not here?  Digicel are not a charity either, so it must be sustainable as their network has been running for almost 2 years now.

I will be very interested to see what NZ Comms have to offer.

Time-Cost-Quality triangle, take your pick. I just don't understand people saying we want absolute dirt cheap service, but the best customer service (which of course is expensive to train, and the premium you pay them to stop migration).

I guess I would enjoy a two-tiered service, one which is relatively low cost, and provides little to no customer service (think free bank accounts), and the other which is higher cost (and maybe at a premium to the incumbents) but provides stellar customer service.

This gives customers the option of picking their own price point in the TCQ triangle, and then being able to tailor products to suit them accordingly.

Basically what I'd like to see is the three networks really having to fight it out over customers. At the moment the two current networks just don't seem to have to do that.

Local calling numbers in addition to mobile number. LCA number would be VoIP, and work over wifi & 3G (assuming you have or will have a 3G network).
A global roaming plan (perhaps with your partner networks), where there is no incoming call charge whilst abroad. Also if you have a bundle of minutes, these can be used abroad too. Maybe this could be an add-on feature to your all your regular plans. This would be aimed at frequent travelers.

Pricing like telecom flexi where I dont have to buy off peak minuites in pathetic fixed sized addons that I have to guess my usage before the month starts like with vodafone choose. Also the limit of 300 mins of offpeak vodafone have is quite annoying

If you can do a sliding pricing scale on prepay even better, since prepay users tend to get screwed if they do heavy usage. Vodafone au has a few good options.

Also focus on auckland coverage and get it to the vodafone level at least before you worry about putting sites in the whopwhops. It was very annoying to hear about hick towns getting coverage back in the 90s when there were still bigger pockets of the city with none. It has to be expensive to try to build a nationwide network, and there is always the ability to swap sims to vodafone when leaving the city, I would rather have low calling rates and good coverage just in the city and suburbs from any new networks.

Also a contact center trained on what they dont know so they dont just make stuff up or tell you that it cannot be done, and instead will put you thru to someone who can/does know.

Also, dont you dare sell handsets with crippled advertising ridden software on them that you have the cheek to say you will lose a warranty if you correct this by putting manufacturer standard software onto it.

The option of keeping my vodafone number would be great, (with the 02x not 021 of course). At the moment I'm on prepaid and only having to top up once a year to keep the prepaid going so that would have to be the same with econet if I switched.

Of course I'm available to test the new network ;)
