My friend in south canterbury is getting ripped off by the above, they are not a tech person at all.

Should they contact Chorus or 2degrees? Chorus say VDSL up to 5Mbps, but 0.04Mbps up is shocking, no wonder they cant even use skype voice or even youtube sometimes.

Worst of all they are locked in for 2 years for this.

@Tealeaf They are not getting ripped off they pay for the line and those speeds exceed the minimum requirement, They are not a Chours customer so they don't contact Chorus,

I suspect they are connected to a Conklin Cabinet which has very limited capacity, Chorus advise up to 5Mbps and 0.04 is up to 5Mbps

Chorus would say ADSL not VDSL as you have quoted

Further to this have they got a master filter installed or are they using Line filters? A master filter may help a bit

Read this blog by @sbiddle it will explain more about a Conklin, Changing ISP will not change a thing as they will still be connected to the same hardware

well the chorus site says VDSL thats all im quoting.

IMO $80 a month for that level of service is a rip off, not blaming 2degrees

Who should they ring just to have it checked anyway?

0.04Mbps is unusable for them. id understand if it was $10 a month.

They don't need to ring all the INFO they need should be in the modem user interface under the xDSL line stats (maintain tab normally) If they are not connected to a Conklin cabinet then they have a major house wiring issue which will be there problem to fix

I get Conklin Cabs, I just think 2 degrees should be checking what service is available before selling up to 200Mbps/100Mbps in their advertising when some people clearly dont read fine print and is their fault, but to get less than Dial up speeds for $80 a month, sorry thats just not right this day and age. They are better off with more 4G in their mobile plan.

Well they are not a Chorus customer so it does not leave many options who they call and I will give you a few hints they don't call Spark / Vodafone / Orcon

Linux I appreciate your help, but this person is a farmer they are not going to know how to check the router or their wiring for battery or earth or anything.

Should they contact chorus or the ISP if they believe they have an issue? just answer that question soley.

I answered this in my first reply and can you narrow down the location from South Canterbury? This is a rather large area

wasnt 52Kbps both ways? If not, my bad. But either way they are better off with Mobile Broadband. But they need to ring someone to have it verified if the house or the copper. Now who do they ring, Chorus or the ISP?

Both the chorus and 2degrees website say VDSL for their address.

So I presume they ring 2degrees then.

Any idea what kind of router it is supplied by 2degrees? Ill try to talk them through it tomorrow. Under that tab how will I know if its a conklin cabinet?

Are you going to narrow down the location as asked for more than once? Even post a street name this will really help
