Trying to set up an VPN from my Android 7.0 Phone to the Fritzbox and it is not connecting.

Followed the instructions from AVM Fritz - seemed very straight forward and should just work, but something is not right.

Any ideas on why I may be doing wrong, any tips or pitfalls that might be causing problems?

Hi, have you tried setting your phone APN to 'Direct'?

VPN's were never historically supported on 2degrees - I assume the direct APN does allow these?

My mobile is with Spark  - its APN says  "internet" - are you saying this should be direct?

You will need to check with Spark. VPN's are blocked on many mobile networks by default since the default APN IP's are CGNAT which will break PPTP and IPSEC. As I don't use Spark I can't be of any assistance.

Sorry @KrazyKid, the "direct" APN is for 2degrees mobiles.

@sbiddle is correct that some networks may not work with some or all types of VPN depending on their network setup. You'll need to check with them to confirm this, or if there is a setting that they can change for their network.

While the Fritz!Boxes we provide have the ability to set up a VPN, this is an advanced feature we do not actively provide support for as it can create security risks for your home network. However, a few troubleshooting steps you can try are:

  • Check if devices can access the VPN externally through a friend's home network (more likely to allow VPN)
  • Check if devices can access the VPN internally (ie while on your home WiFi/LAN network)
  • Try the above on multiple devices, in case it's a specific device that is not compatible

If it works internally but not externally, it's may be a 2degrees network issue, because we don't actively block VPN connections. Send us your customer number and address, as well as screenshots of the error you get when you try to connect and our technical team can investigate.

Cheers,

^BRM

Thanks for the tips. I managed to get open VPN working to my Nas but never couple get the fritzbox VPN going on my old Android 5 phone. So I know vpns in general the work on the networks.
Now I've got a new Android so trying again. I'll give it a go at a friend's and see. Be nice to go to the router with a vpn rather the NAS but if I must I must

I have it working from my Vodafone mobile to my Fritzbox on 2degrees.

You have created a connection type of "IPsec Xauth PSK" ?
Put in the current external IP address of the router in the phone?
Made sure you are not connected to the Fritzbox via WiFi when you try to open a VPN connection? (ie. turn off WiFi on your phone and make it use the mobile connection for internet)
