Hey y'all,

So I'm on 2Degrees Fibre and for a little over 2 weeks now I have identified a frustrating problem with accessing Facebook when I'm assigned certain IPv4 IP addresses on 2Degrees.  The issue is that images are not loading in Chrome web browsers or even the iOS Facebook and Instagram apps on my mobile devices.  When trying to access via Chrome I can see it stalling out 5-edge-chat.facebook.com in the Chrome status bar. Using Chrome Inspector there are massive amount of pending request tied to Facebooks CDN network (fbcdn.net).

Here's the kicker...

This *only* occurs if I have been issued an IPv4 address in the following ranges (that I have identified so far...there could be more)

151.210.149.0/24

151.210.150.0/24

151.210.153.0/24

I can instantly resolve this issue on my mobile devices, laptop, or desktop system by connecting to a VPN or by bouncing my 2D PPPOE session until I get issued an IP address outside of those subnets (e.g. 111.69.182.0/24).

I have reported this to 2D 11 days ago and they can only tell me 'they are investigating'.  My guess is this is probably confusing the heck out of lots of other poor 2D customers who land on those subnets.

So, I'm just kind of making this post as a PSA (Public Service Announcement) in case anyone else is vexxed by this problem.

If for some reason someone is on one of those subnets and Facebook is working for you, I'd be fascinated to hear about it, though.  This problem is totally device/platform agnostic for me.

And before anyone else posts this question....Yes, I have checked IP Tables at the firewall level and, no, I don't have any weird rules that would affect just those network ranges

Same here, I have been puzzled by this. Was working once I enabled ipv6 but this broke something else for me so not an option.

Hopefully we see some change soon

I had the exact same issue and had a long call to the call centre trying to explain the problem.

In the end, the agent spoke to someone more senior who changed my IP to get it working.

The problem seems to be with a particular CDN node(https://scontent.fhlz1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/) in Hamilton when I was on the problematic subnet range.

The other Hamilton nodes(ie. 2-1, 3-1) work, but 1-1 would fail to connect.

After my IP was changed, I'm now going to the Wellington node(https://scontent.fwlg1-1.fna.fbcdn.net) but going to the Hamilton 1-1 node works too.

To test, you can use this image from the Tank Juice facebook page:

Wellington(works):

Hamilton 1-1(didn't work):

My IP is out of this range + I am using IPv6 so am not having any issues here.

I locked the other thread as this one is more detailed with what the problem could potentially be. Can you enable IPv6 and test via that also?

@NickMack - thanks, will be curious if you can shed any light on this matter.

One issue of concern and frustration I have with every ISP I have ever used is that they are always reticent to actually update their public 'network status' pages accurately and 2Degrees seems to have fallen prey to this.

If you could encourage someone over there to update the Broadband Network Service Status page that really would be the 'right' thing to do.  Facebook / Instagram are likely used by a majority of 2D customers and it's really unfair to them to not make an update/notice that states that 'some users may experience issues with facebook/instagram and we are investigating'.  I'm sure it is frustrating and confusing people and causing everyone to waste time trying to reboot modems, troubleshoot the issue, place calls to 2D support, etc, etc...

I recall they had similar issues affecting the central North Island region last time they deployed other CDNs in Hamilton too, must be something special about that part of their network.

Hi All,

I've had the team looking into this for the most of the today - We have found the issue and have put a temporary work around in place. We will reboot the hardware in Hamilton early tomorrow morning to resolve/repair the corruption of the routing table.

I have observed this at work and noted with the IT guys two days ago, funny to see it here!

Cheers

@NickMack - thanks so much for getting a little extra attention on this one! Corrupt routing table certainly would cause issues.

I can confirm that your workaround seems to be fine. I just bounced my PPPOE session and I'm currently on the 151.210.148.0/24 subnet and Facebook is loading images just fine.

Hiya,

No worries thanks for raising it - We are also tightening up some processes around escalation of these types of issues and how we deal with them based on this.

Nick.

I guess this is the sort of stuff they want to avoid with the testing of CDNs in the lead up to RWC streaming.

It's ironic that only on-net reachability is affected rather than peering (is there any in Hamilton anyway?)

Hi Yitz - Testing begins shortly on the RWC platform with underlying platform for the CDN being known to all providers - it's been around for some time.  We have a bunch of caches of various flavours located in Hamilton, as well as nodes across the country.

The good thing about RWC streaming is that Spark is working and communicating with providers. We as a country need this to perform well and provide us with these types of opportunites in the future. No-one wants to deliver or experience through consumption the types of challenges that Optus had for streaming FIFA - https://www.google.co.nz/search?ei=biNlXISMEZTyrAHw25boDQ&q=optus+streaming+issues+fifa&oq=optus+streaming+issues+fifa&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0i22i30.6975.8153..9666...0.0..0.243.1176.2-5......0....1..gws-wiz.......0i71.do_3zF4rrh4.
