I'm looking at changing my ISP and Orcon looks good - but I see on another thread that some P2P users are having problems with Orcon. I would hate to go through the process of changing only to find more frustration when I am downloading.

Any comments?

great speeds on bit torrent, just dont use bt/p2p during peak hours, rougly 3-4pm to 11-12ish

Not sure on your own experiences, however I'm on Orcon's most expensive plan and I get great P2P speeds any time of day.

I think the word you are after is traffic manage. High priorty traffic is preffered over low priorty traffic (ie torrents).

simple fix just turn on encrypted connections fixes that problem

They can pattern match encrypted bit torrent if their DPI box is smart enough.

come on we're NZ not the US i doubt orcon could afford one let alone find anyone here to install and maintain the damn thing considering they can barely keep internationnal data flowing

FYI: They are using a Cisco Service Control Engine appliance which is carrier grade quality and that is known to be able to pattern match encrypted bit torrent flows

I'm on 100GB and I use every last byte of it downloading via bittorent, emule, share, irc and direct download.

No problems at all but they ask you not to p2p during peak times and I don't.

ISPs really can stop p2p - emule was unusable during my last year in Singapore, they partially blocked bittorent as well.

I don't think they can block irc and direct download without blocking legitimate uses of it

oh, fyi, only the scum of the earth use p2p during peak hours, and evrey other time my connection is sweet.

Traffic management is what enables you to surf webpages and watch Youtube vids when some clown and a dozen of his clones are trying to torrent the latest survivor gabon episode 3 at 7pm on a rainy day.

Torrents should be blocked from 3pm-9pm, period.

And you'd have also noticed then that i have said before that i start my d/ls when i go to bed and stop them when i get up so 1am to 7am evan so it doesn't stop youtube from buffering at anytime of the day i still cant get it to stream without buffering evan in the early hours of the morning

oh and by the way borg if my torrenting is affecting your use of the net then that is my not problem i pay for what i use and if that affects others then its orcons problem for not being able to cope with demand not mine oh and how much useless data is downloaded and wasted when you stream a youtube video >> click play>>>stream>>>>>watch>>>>gone
uTorrent>>>load torrent file>>>download>>>watch>>>stored for later use

If you are paying for each GB you use then you should be able to torrent whenever the hell you feel like it!

If you are on one of those "unlimited data" plans then you should be subceptable to what ever restriction your isp places on you.
