I have never had any real problems regarding dropouts with Orcon. I have a desktop computer which plugs into my Dynalink RTA 1320 (supplied by Orcon) via CAT5.

I have now introduced a laptop which connects to the router via a USB cable. This is when the dropouts began. When playing games online using the desktop computer on its own, everything is fine but when the laptop is on and being used to browse the net, I can experience dropouts every 5-10 minutes on a bad day. It seems that the more players moving on the screen makes it drop out more than when I play other 2 player games online.

When it drops out, the PPP light, and sometimes the DSL light turn off on the router. Is there any way of resolving this issue?

Stop using the USB port and get a switch. USB on those things is slower then ethernet anyway

yea i thought it could be that. cant really afford a switch right now but i'll report back if the problem persists once i do get one

What sort of switch are you planning on getting?? Generally they are less than $40 for a 8 port switch..

I have disconnected the USB cable and I still experience drop outs when playing games online. What could be the cause?

I had one of those modems suplied by orcon. i went through two of them first one kept overheating and eventualy died the second one just up and died after a power cut i now use and siemens speedstream 4200 which is ok it does the job, and an Huawei smartAX mt882 great sync speed but drops out due to lousy snr handling and i think this could be your problem the mt882 does it alot and when i say alot im not jokin try 10x in 15mins hence why i dont use it as for the problem have you tried contacting orcon becuase it will show in their logs for you that there is a problem if your constantly dis/reconnecting alot in a day

I don't think that the USB port is really intended for connecting a 2nd PC - you should use either the Ethernet or USB.

Two suggestions - either buy a cheap switch (check out TradeMe) or a decent 4-port modem router. You can get a TP-Link for about $65 as recommended by the whirlpool forums: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=969076

I thinkI have found the problem. I found that the modem is very hot and has turned the casing a yellow colour. I have found that this particular model has overheating issues and I think the dropouts are caused by the modem getting too hot and restarting. I had since propped the modem up on its side and it is now alot cooler and I have had no dropouts today. I will be contacting Orcon about this issue and I guess I'll go from there...

It addition to my last post, I have been looking at getting a modem/wireless router combo to save having 2 boxes cluttering the place up.

I initially found a good one, D-Link DSL-G604T which is currently on offer. I decided to check it out but when reading the online manual saw that its date was 2004 and that it didn't have WPA2 on it!

I have found the up to date replacement for it, DSL-2640B however it seems that this is not sold in NZ. Does anyone know if this is available or if there is a better product out there?

Advice: Stay away from ALL d-link products.

Yea thanks for the advice. I did realise this today after doing some research into it. I was going to go for a Netgear DG834G but I think I'm going to try my BT Home Hub from the UK and see if I can get that working. It has a USB port on it that can be used as a print server which is quite cool.

i actually cut the top vent out of mine and used some thermal epoxy to put a hsf on the main chip which worked well to stop the over heating issue

I've got a D-Link G604T with the current firmware loaded (V3.02B01T01.NZ.20080827).

It's been a good modem for over three months - no issues with dropouts, etc. Was on XNet's fusion, now on Orcon's Home+

nb.   It does have WPA2-PSK - assume it was added with one of the many firmware updates..

Yeah that's the one I use :D.

After using a Conextant, DSE and Linksys ADSL Modem router the Dynalink's the best one so far

Connects with great stats and when it does drop it reconnects really fast :D

I don't have a dynalink myself, I'm using the Orcon homehub, I can only comment on that d-link (not dynalink) modems struggle to sync on connection quite some distance from an exchange when compared to other modems, this is why d-link modems tend to drop connection more than other modems do. Back when I was using a d-link 502-t, randomly a day would come and it would drop connection every 30 minutes for the whole day, very annoying, but this homehub has being rather reliable, I've only lost connection once in the last 2 weeks and it was for 5 minutes. I might also add that any decent modem will sync around 15% higher than a d-link modem/router.
