There is a thread on this relative to Vodafone:

Wi-Fi Calling while Roaming (geekzone.co.nz)

With this, the daily roaming charge is triggered by use of a cellular network. Using Airplane mode prevents access to cellular networks, and if WIFI is available and connected then WIFI calling is available at no cost.

Can anyone confirm the situation for 2 degrees users?

Yes; I spent some time recently in the USA, and did exactly that - left my cellphone in Flight Mode; but enabled WiFi; and used 2Degrees WiFi calling (and SMS send/receive) when I had WiFi available.

No roaming charges.

100% no roaming charges just got back last Friday from overseas and WiFi calling worked a dream

txt messages will still come through via VoWiFi, so if you get people to send you a txt instead, they will get through to you.

I would have assumed you'd get a voicemail notification if someone left a message?

Easy enough to test if you have access to a 2nd phone...

@jamesrt If the handset is in flight mode and the WiFi is off then it would be impossible to get a SMS notification of a new Voice message left

If the WiFi is on and WiFi calling is enabled then yes you would get the SMS

@Linux; sure, aware that SMS can go over the VoWiFi connection [Spark excepted, currently]; but I semi-assumed that any SMS messages would queue until the handset turned up again if they were sent when it was 'offline'. I thought that was how it worked 'back in the day'; but well aware your knowledge is much greater than mine.

WiFi Calling on 2degrees when overseas works - and is charged - "as if you are in NZ." So calls (and texts) back to NZ numbers are as if you are making those calls in NZ. If you make a call to a number in the country you are in, it is as if you made that call from NZ to that country at standard international rates, which is still usually much cheaper than a roaming call.

Remember that the call traffic (data) is always going through a tunnel from the phone, over the overseas WiFi access network (that you have got onto) and back to the 2degrees gateway in NZ, there is no roaming partner cost to 2degrees that has to be covered.
