Bit of a random one; has anyone used the roaming barring via their account? when its ticked (barring enabled), what happens to your account if you are overseas and you take your device out of flight mode? Does it connect to a cell tower? or refuse registration when it tries to connect?

Think the incoming calling party will hear something like ' The number you have dialed can't accept calls at this time '

Interesting, okay. Is there any way to turn it off so it doesn’t attach?

Turn off the mobile functions of the device.  Usually in the Connections / Mobile Networks setting.  Might need to deselect Automatic selection.  It'll change it to manual selection of available services.   Then I assume just don't select one.

Or just leave Airplane Mode on and manually enable WiFi and Bluetooth if you need them.  They will work independently of the mobile radio in Airplane Mode, same as when you're on the plane and using earbuds or in-flight WiFi etc.

When you login to the 2degrees website it looks like you can disbale Roaming under ' Manage mobile barring options '

This will disable romaing and what you actually want so the handset will not attach to a roaming carrier

Thanks! Yes I’ve used the mobile barring option via the portal, so if that stops the registration against a cell tower, that will achieve what I want. Can’t use Flight Mode to achieve what I’m wanting to do here.
second option would be manually selecting the network against one 2D sont have an agreement with.

I shall give this a go when I head overseas shortly! Thanks both.

Manually lock it to 2degrees before you leave.

@Stu How could you do that if you are in another country? The handset will connect to another network even if manual network selection is selected

@Linux OP said "I shall give this a go when I head overseas shortly! Thanks both"

Which is why I suggested to lock to 2degrees before they leave.

You can't lock a handset to 2degrees only if it is SIM locked (this would not help when roaming) the handset will still search and attach to a roaming network/s even if on manual network selection

SIM locked? Obviously I mean manually select 2degrees before leaving NZ. Don't think anyone said the phone was "SIM locked".

@Stu I was simply putting out I was not talking about SIM locking but manually selecting 2degrees before leaving NZ will do nothing as when you get to another country and power up the handset it will go searching for mobile networks to attach to even if the handset is set to manual network selection

You said SIM locked.

Other than that, why would the SIM try to latch on to a local network if the network selection is set to manual and the network it was set to previously doesn't exist? I don't remember that happening earlier in the year in Brisbane. Didn't get a roaming charge until I changed it to automatic on about day 3, so how does that work?

Manual network selection is only really used to force a handset onto a mobile network or change mobile networks when you have the option to select more than one (generally when roaming)

But manually selecting your home network before going to another country will not do anything it will not stop the handset from attaching to a roaming partner network

I'll also ignore other posts suggesting to use manual selection as it's obviously wrong information. (eg. https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=179&topicid=319215&page_no=1#3360335)
