I got the inside word from 2degrees earlier today about their new $6 50MB Data Pack add on. Their official release says:

2degrees, New Zealand’s newest mobile network company, today released its first data pack, offering 50MB of mobile data for just $6. This represents the lowest prepay mobile data plan entry price point available on the market.

The 2degrees 50MB Data Pack has been released in response to express customer demand says Larrie Moore, Chief Marketing Officer. “The call for access to prepay mobile data is increasing. Our new 50MB Data Pack is the accessible, simple, and flexible entry to mobile prepay data that Kiwis have been asking for.”

With this 50MB Data Pack add on, 2degrees is targeting customers who want access to mobile email and light websites , with social network services and their mobile-friendly websites and clients seeming to be the main focus. It could obviously be used for anything - I've used 2degrees mobile data to access Google Maps and other similar services, with both Windows Mobile and Android devices.

The company is clearly placing bets on enticing iPhone users who signed up for two year contracts back in July 2008 when Vodafone launched the first of these devices in the country, and will soon be free to port their numbers to other mobile networks if they feel so inclined - and if they see value in it.

Current 2degrees customers can purchase the data pack by texting ‘buy 50mb’ to short code 233. Each pack is valid for 30 days, and customers can buy multiple packs each month, independent from the purchase of any other package.

Users will receive an SMS when the data allowance is almost reached, or when 29 days have elapsed. Once the add on pack is completely used (or expires), users will switch back to casual data rates.

Also being announced today is the $10 Text Pack, with 500 SMS to any New Zealand network – effectively $0.02 per SMS. As an additional promotion to mark the launch of the new $10 Text Pack, 2degrees is offering a “buy-one-get-one free” TextPack incentive until 30 June. Customers can access this offer once, to receive a $10 credit to spend on another $10 Text Pack that will kick in the following month.

The 2degrees $10 Text Pack is valid for 30 days, and auto-renews each month. The Packs are available today for purchase by texting ‘buy 10txt’ to 233.

Damn I'm staying!
So I topup $50 and get 1000 texts 50MB data and 77 minutes of calling to anyone. Not bad.

kyhwana2: Nice.. especially the 500txts to any network thing..

OTOH, $6/50MB is still more expensive than vodafone..

Its way better than $1/day - it lasts all month!

Very nice; I'm currently paying Telecom $12 for 120 MB but I usually only use about 30 MB. $6 is a much better deal. Now, if only 2degrees had coverage where I live...

can you setup the data packs to automatically renew or buy another one?

i may occasionally go over 50mb a month, or i may forget to text the renew code, so that may be annoying.

The $6 pack is interesting, I will probably use it when I am away from home and work for a few days, i.e. out of the wi-fi zones. This is when I need mobile data the most.

Wow. When 3G launches I will be back. If only I hadn't switched back to Vodafone 3 weeks back.

On the other hand, when the 3 months of free 100MB data per month expires in August I will probably come back anyway.

i may occasionally go over 50mb a month, or i may forget to text the renew code, so that may be annoying.

When your allowance gets down to 10MB you'll get a text notification from us to say that you're nearing your limit so you don't need to worry about forgetting to text the renew code.

Vodafone has the $10/100MB addon for prepay, except on the new Simply Fail prepaid plan..
(Which is what I'm currently on now, although I use about 60-80mb a month atm)

What would absolutely rock if is 2Degrees can update their Consume (iPhone app) feed so that it displays mb used... Might be one for the too-hard basket though?

I say it would be good if 2degrees gave users a choice of being notified when nearing limit, or continue being charged at $6/50MB. It's annoying to have to TXT to renew everytime. I'm sure many iPhone users will chew through that 50MB fairly quickly.

Actually I might debate that it is more expensive for handset users. Don't forget that these bundles can be bought multiple times in a month, so all your data usage will be covered by the bundles, you won't pay any more than this, so the effective rate actually is 12c/MB as long as you use at least 50MB a month.

OTOH, VF bundles can only be bought once a month, so you have to use exactly 100MB a month to enjoy the effective rate of 10c/MB. If you less data, you'll pay a higher effective rate. You have to use at least 83MB a month for VF to be cheaper.

And if you use more than 100MB and double up, you then only have the rest of the month to use the extra 100MB so you're even more likely to only use a portion of that data block. If you buy another 50MB from 2degrees, you have another 30 days to use it.

So all in all, VF is only going to be cheaper if you use between 83-100MB or more than 166MB a month. How confident are you in your handset data usage falling in those ranges every month?

It'll work out just about perfect for me. Have currently been spending 15 to 20 cents a day on mobile websites with 2 degrees so there is the 6 dollars gone. Would be nice if there had been a auto renew option though.

say I have topped up and gotten some free SMS with that magic topup. then a few days later I get the txt bundle, which pool of txts get used first? FIFO or LIFO?

You can't buy more than 1 text pack; that is, you get the 500 texts every 30 days, but if you use them up you cannot buy another. You do continue to get bonus texts when you topup, however. The system will always use your oldest texts first, regardless of whether they came from a topup or the text bundle.
