I've been on orcon now for years with their BB service.  About a month ago we sold our house and for the past month house sitting  for someone who was also on Orcon.  So that we would not use their BB I plugged in my ADSL router and it booted up to my account.  So far so good.

Last nite we went to the new house  and plugged in the ADSL router.  ADSL came up  sync down was about 16Mbits and up 135kbits however no WAN IP address.  Called Orcon and their CSR said "Strange.  Can you factory default your router as this normally fixes this problem"   I told him the router had been working  at the other place and at my old house up to about 30 minutes ago so I decline to factory reset as the time was getting late and they were closing in about an hour.  Went  back to the other house and the ADSL and WAN came up fine.

I suspect that the port at the local exchange is disabled or faulty or connected to another ISP.  I will try tonite and will default the router before I call them just to make  them happy but I suspect that is not the problem but Orcons..

Am i correct in thinking this???

While it's true, it probably is a fault at the exchange, it's also quite plausible that there's an issue with your modem.

Rolling a Chorus tech to your local exchange to re-seat your cabling or move you to a new port is expensive in both your time and theirs. If resetting routers to factory defaults fixes 1 fault in 5, imagine how much time and money that'd save their customers.

You could have it forced to a certain adsl modulation to cause that crap upstream speed.

cant expect ISPs to support other routers so a factory reset is a good option IMO.

Wouldnt you have actually been using their broadband?

I understood that recently the authentication on the router is ignored (depends a bit on the supplier and coonection), and the fact you were plugged into their connection would mean you were in fact using their broadband.

No.  I check both mine and theirs  Orcon  usage and only my account went up.  Theirs stayed at about zero..

Had a similar issue once with another ISP. Turned out the previous owners ISP was still assigned/enabled on the line. Of course my router didn't know that so told me their was ADSL available, it just couldn't make a connection.

Had to get previous owner to contact his ISP to 'release' the line so it could be reallocated to mine.... all probably simple keyboard fixes somewhere in the system but identifying what the issue was involved a lot more time and effort than the resolution.

Depends on the provider.

Telecom generally uses per line authentication now and basically ignores the username and login in the modem.

Other ISP's do different things.

According to a Telecom helpdesk person earlier this year "it all changed"

I'm not sure on the truth of this but he said basically there is one place that handles all the allocation of lines, IPs (within the ISP range I expect) etc. I assume this is Telecom's previous provisioning team. So a new line from the beginning of this year is handled by them and they have some different defaults compared to some ISPs.

He said all authentication is by line and all IPs are static even if not advertised as static. I'm not convinced of this. I'm sure I've seen a new line with a dynamic changing address.

Anyway the guts is a new line after Jan 1 2010 could be quite differently configured to your previous one.

This would not apply to ISPs that provide their own cabinets only to wholesaled lines.

Update to this issue. I did all the things required by Orcon including a needless factory default and nothing. Got a call from them today saying that they did not realize that I had moved so my account hadn't been provisioned. Kind of strange because I got a welcome email about 3 weeks ago and a follow up post card with all my info on it at the new address. Anyway they are going to re provision it again but I most likely won't see any BB until Monday. That god for 2Ds 50meg of data plan. Pity my fone doesn't do 3G on the 2100 band and have to use edge..
