I made the switch from xnet to Slingshot, today I finally get connected and try to download my tv shows using newsdemon usenet account which I can get 17megabit down on xnet constantly.
Slingshot cannot even get above 10kbps... what is up with that? Is this normal?
even on astraweb I cannot get above 10kbps.

Torrents are fine though..... me thinks slingshot is slowing down usenet server access.

Finally got a hold of them and asked them why my speeds are so slow and they tell me they cannot trouble shoot because news groups contain 'illegal' files. biggest bunch of bollocks I have ever heard.

LOL dude, you started by saying your downloading TV illegally and when the helpdesk tells you it's illegal you spit the dummy.

Usenet is classed as a bulk download site and as such is prioritised at the bottom of the heap. Also I think slingshot doesn't support usenet, they don't have a server and they don't offer support for users using a server.

The only tips I can think of is get a VPN and rule one, don't talk about the fight club, i mean illegal file sharing.

okay figured out that if you use astraweb, use the SSL connection and you can get 600-800kbps constant download onpeak, dont know about offpeak yet but with xnet this was 1.7mb constant.

I only download TV shows that screen in the US, I wouldnt have to do this IF new zealand wasnt so far behind and showed the shows that I like.

besides they have legal stuff on usenet just like there is legal stuff on torrent, why should the tech from slingshot automatically assume that i am downloading movies??

Torrents are sometimes legal too but they are still the lowest priority on the network.

Usenet servers (esp premium servers) are pretty much only used for piracy (otherwise why would people pay for new servers). I wouldn't be surprised if it was classified as P2P and throttled as such..

I've found sites such as rapidshare are very limited during free periods, to the speed you've stated (4-5k) and regularly fail before finishing. If usenet is in the same category as these you'll find the same.

I find it interesting how you say you use it to download pirated tv shows, then call it 'bollocks' when you're effectively called on it, then try and justify it on here because 'NZ is too far behind on TV so therefore it's ok'.

The tech probably suspected that because you're using a service that is mostly used for piracy. You've confirmed that you were your posts on here, so it seems that they were right.

Im sure this post will be worrying a few ppl signing up for all you can eat. im on the FS/FS 25Gb plan and torrenting is a nightmare and if usenet is bad leechers are gonna have heaps of problems on allyoucaneat :/

I was able to download 8.02gig in my free period today; its crap but if I can constantly get that over the month then I suppose it is alright.

Quite interested to see if there is any response to this - I'm looking at moving to the all u can eat plan and use usenet primarily over other methods. What about ssl?

it wouldnt even get past 10kbps on the non ssl servers, as soon as I put in the ssl settings it bumped up to 300-400kbps.
Right now it is sitting at 1.3mbps

During the day I get 1.6MB per second on usenet, then offpeak it can be between 300kbps and 1.6MBps, seems to be ~300kbps for awhile then I'll have a week of 1.6MBps. But during the day it is always really quick, I've seen it at 1.8MBps a couple of times but 1.65MBps is more normal.

What are your line speeds? If I could get 500kB/s constant on anything I'd be happy! My line speed is roughly 4.5mbit
