An entry phone that's 5 years old is more responsive. The contact list lags a lot. The inbox needs an "Opening..." screen to load the text messages list which also lags when navigating up and down.\

Unless you buy it as an emergency phone and make the most of their "topup $x get the phone free" deal, I do not recommend it as a cheap, basic no bells-n-whistles phone which you may expect to be getting.

What happened to the cheap, reliable and solid basic phones?

Blame the Nokia Symbian OS. Although their N8 has a fairly responsive OS, the older/cheaper phones are still stuck with the slow and outdated version of Symbian.

Try to hook it up to the Ovi Suite and check if there is a firmware/software update. Hope an update speeds things up.

There doesn't appear to be any way to update the firmware.

Thing is this phone should be an improvement over previous (older) basic phones I have used such as the Nokia 1325 (CDMA). What I should be paying for is something that has an organiser, can call and sms, and do these functions that have been around for decades, properly.

The nokia 1100 was IMO the best of the cheap nokias that just make phonecalls and sms, after that when they added colour screens and ability to get postage stamp sized MMS etc it was all downhill.

The 2730 is basically the cheapest usable phone to come from nokia now, and it is pretty bad with lag with its outdated unupdatable S40 junk on it.

Agree, the 2730 is a good usable cheap phone, but I haven't had any lag on it..
Of course, the 845 is the cheapest in the "smart phone" category

wanghou168, 2 degrees are giving away free phones, you should get one! But don't complain when it doesn't work as you would expect it to; it was free! Recommend this phone model to others as well because everyone loves freebies.

You're right that I can't complain about the free credit, but this isn't a case where "everything is amazing and nobody is happy".

It was not free, it was $80, with $80 of credit to be used in a set manner. If it was a free phone I could just walk in and say gimme a free phone and walk out with a phone.

I fully agree, I loved my 1100. Would go a solid fortnight off the one charge with lots of use. I miss it but I'm not sure if I could go back to it now :(

I liked how you could turn it on and make a call. none of this booting up nonsense that seems to be getting worse and worse as phones get more and more smart. The N97 was so bad for that, I just never turned it off, only used silent mode. God forbid you have to quickly slap another sim into a smart phone just to check the messages. You will be at least 4 mins before you even get to when you can put a phone number into it.

I miss my old 1100. Got mugged a few years ago. That phone was a solid phone <3

The Nokia 1616 is in this price range and I when I had a look at one seemed pretty decent for a calling and SMS only phone.

Same phone (1616 has a speaking clock, 1800 has FM radio), different case. They share the same User Guide.

I have used the 1616 and it's the same (actually, I should have used 1616 in the title because that's what 2 degrees is selling currently but they list the 1800 on their site...)
