Hi, just out of curiosity; many people might be on prepay with not much credit on their phones.  Now they are affected by the earthquake, those who need the connection may not have the ability to top up funds (like those trapped).

Does 2 Degrees and other cell providers allow customers to call/text for the meantime and then  bill them afterwards?  Is there like a earthquake plan they put into place?

I think vodafone/telecom are. Vodafone prepay users should call 777 http://forum.vodafone.co.nz/topic/7340-christchurch-earthquake-support/

Not sure about telecom.

A good tip (off topic): if you are running out of battery change your voice mail greeting to let people know you are ok. This way even if you can't answer the phone they get the message.

make sure you include the date and time you are recording the message too.

what you don't want to happen is for there to another aftershock which traps you somewhere yet your voicemail is telling people you are ok.

2degrees:
Send credit to family & friends in Christchurch
Staying in touch is vital – but topping up your mobile is difficult, if not impossible right now for many Christchurch customers.

With a number of retailers out of action, 2degrees has some simple ways for New Zealanders to help those affected, allowing them to give phone credit to those who need to be in contact with friends and family.

“2degrees recognises that being able to keep in touch with friends and family is essential at this time.” says Eric Hertz, CEO, 2degrees.  “These options will allow anyone in New Zealand on any network to give credit to 2degrees prepay users in Christchurch.”

Option 1: Credit Card
Anyone can top up a 2degrees mobile user by calling 0800 022 022.  All they’ll need is the mobile number of the 2degrees phone they want to top up and their credit card number.

Option 2: Transfer from 2degrees to 2degrees

Transfer credit from one 2degrees Prepay phone to another 2degrees Prepay phone. Just text 6238 with the recipient’s 2degrees number, then *, then the amount to transfer. Eg: To transfer $20:    022 XXX XXXX*20 then text to 6238

2degrees is also supporting the Christchurch Earthquake Red Cross Appeal and customers can make an automatic $3 donation by texting to the shortcode 306. The $3 credit will be added to your Pay Monthly bill or taken from your Prepay credit balance.
