Interesting article here.

It's interesting that they claim that the Commerce Commission's intention to "review the mobile sector" has prompted them to speed up the roll-out of their wireless network. The decision to air-freight their network equipment might save them a few days, while it could take months or even years before the results of the Commerce Commission's review start to take effect.

As always, we seem to be getting a lot of talk but not a lot of action out of Econet.

But then again, successful or not, Econet will probably take the heat off Voda and Telecom. Better to have an el'cheapo third party build a network than someone like TCL who have very deep pockets.

alasta: Interesting article here.

For the record... that's an Econet press release that Scoop reprinted, not an article.

Econet are pretty well dead before they start, they have lost so much money pushing pens for 5 years that they won;t have any capital left to start building the network and also having to run at a loss for another 4 years.

Of course, they could have started up a super cheap Auckland only service and there would have been some people who would have switched over, at least SOME income would have trickled in and they had gotten at least some presence in the market.

And don't forget the $5M of tax payer funds they have sucked up from Hautaki Trust.
