Hey

I thought I would share something I have been playing with over the past few days. We have recently moved house and taken our Snap connection with us. We have had an issue where intermittently webpages would not load giving a page not available error in both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

I played around with router settings which didn't solve the problem. From searching similar issues on the net I eventually came across namebench from Google. From their website,

"Try out namebench. It hunts down the fastest DNS servers available for your computer to use. namebench runs a fair and thorough benchmark using your web browser history, tcpdump output, or standardized datasets in order to provide an individualized recommendation. namebench is completely free and does not modify your system in any way. This project began as a 20% project at Google."

Using Namebench and changing our DNS servers resulted in the page load problems disappearing and even improved page load times. Although that could all be mental the faster page loads, at least the pages always load now.

You can find Namebench here, http://code.google.com/p/namebench/. It may be common knowledge I wouldn't know but it helped me.

Cheers
Matthew

As explained there, use of third party DNS will impact access to sites that rely on CDNs...

The DNS that I ended up using was xtra. I should be ok with that then I imagine.

Except that if your ISP provide a private cache for the CDN then you might have problems. For example Akamai provides CDN edge servers for Telecom and others. If you try to access Xero for example and get an IP that is only accessible through Telecom's own network then you won't reach the site. And so on for other domains using Akamain, such as microsoft.com and apple.com

Really you should get your ISP to fix their DNS. DNS is after all a basic service the ISP should provide, and should be as reliable as the physical connection.
