Hey guys! It's been a while.

Anyways I have just moved to Auckland CBD into an apartment. I've finally gotten my Internet set up but was quite disappointed at the speed I am getting.

(Please take note when I talk about "MegaBits" and "MegaBytes" they are not the same.)

Firstly I'd like to know. If you are on Orcon and living in/near the CBD area what speeds are you getting?

I'm currently in Nelson Street, which is apparently right next to the Mayoral Orcon Exchange and I'm maxing out at only 9Megabits a second. This gives me about an average of 1Megabyte a second download speed. ( And I'm now running the new Orcon HomeHub Router)

When I was living down south in Pukekohe, I was getting 18-20 Megabits per second. Which averaged around 2.5megabytes a second download. ( Was really happy with that )

I guess I thought I would be getting the same speeds if not better since I'm literally next to the exchange. Kinda sad I'm getting ADSL1 speeds on an ADSL2+ plus area.

So what speeds are you getting? Mine below.

Well seeing as you are getting 9 Megabits you are connected with ADSL2 as ADSL1 Cap out at 8 Megabits IIRC, Are you sure you are connected to that exchange and not a cabinet somewhere else?

I did phone Orcon, but I'm guessing the guy I spoke to was a newbie. Didn't sound very confident. But I've got no problem with that, gotta start somewhere =)

But he did say I was connected to that exchange next to me, he did a line reset as well but it's still just as slow. Sadly...

yeah show us ya stats, sounds to me like wiring issue, stats will put light on it.

Doh, you posted as I did, 20dB and only 10Mb/s, definitely well below expected, and if you are as close as you say, then 20db is roughly 1.5km of cable, which could be real as we dont know the cable path, nor infact if you are off that exchange or Aridale.

so tell us more about your apartment wiring, howmany phone sockets, whats on them, and filters.

Well it's not an old building, still in good shape! The wiring ports don't look old or anything.

3 ports in my apartment, nothing plugged into the other two. Only the one in the study with my router. I'm currently on Naked Broadband so no filter will be needed, so there's no phones to cause Interference.

18-20 Mega bits. Damn thats fast for Puke. I only get 6.5 Mb's at the most, and 3.5 at peak times. Which part of Puke was this? (that speed can only mean your connected to one of the fibre optics that run throuph puke).

hi, unforturnately for you you cannot find whats in the riser or basement, ie where else your line goes.

If you take all the plates off the wall can you work out which is the order or wiring, ie which is the first socket the inbound line goes to, does it split two ways from there or are the other two in series, if you can work that out and isolate off any stub then you might be better off.

I was living on Queen Street Pukekohe, right opposite bledisloe park. Yea it was really good speeds, that's why I loved being with Orcon there.

I'd just like to thank you for not using millibits per second (mbps) like so many on here do. Perhaps their shift key is broken?

To answer the speed question, I'm on the Orcon+ network located in the city fringe (Eden Terrace) and getting about 8Mb/s and I'm pretty sure that's direct from the Mayoral Drive exchange, not from a cabinet. You should be getting much better than me where you are.

Agree totally either chorus tech or indepandent phone/data tech. Most of us here will spend around $1k/annum on BB, so to spend a one off 10-15% of that to ensure you get what you are paying for (wrt to the physical connection) should be a no brainer.

Also, if you are/were paying a wiring maint fee, I recommend you stop and again you do the above, this will give your phone wiring a WOF and pretty much eliminate any chance of being stung a fault fee in the event of something going wrong, and will get the best out or your line. Plus by stopping the maint fee you save yourself the master filter and wiring upgrade over 3-4yrs.

Well I have to disagree, folk have been paying for this for years yet it has not helped them one bit to get good BB speeds. Might have made sense 30-40yrs ago when the options and needs were different, but not now.
