I'm about to upgrade from an iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 4S, which obviously means that I'm going to have to transfer my connection from my existing SIM to a micro SIM.

Would I be right in assuming that it's just a matter of buying a micro SIM and then asking the call centre to transfer my connection over to it?

When I did this I had to request a blank microsim from 2degrees, which they sent for free and arrived the next day, and then call them and they transferred my account over. I don't think you can do it by buying a microsim in a store with a number already assigned to it. 2degrees stores mayhold these blank microsims in stock so you may be able to get it all done there a little quicker. 2degrees were very quick transferring details between the sims, was all done within 30 mins of coming off the phone it I remember correctly.

Indeed, I just gave them a call, 2 minutes later was sorted. Arrived a couple of days later.
Get new phone, call them back, sorted in 5 minutes. Very easy!

Personally, I would just have a go at cutting it down. You don't have to be perfect; just avoid cutting the metal. I've done it several times and never had a problem.

If you (or anyone else) wanted to follow SaltyNZ's suggestion of cutting down your current sim, and you're in the Wellington area, I have a microsim cutter that will make it much easier and more accurate and most happy for anyone to use it. It's quick, easy and have had perfect results every time.

My partner was told by 2degrees customer service to go and buy a new blank microsim, I'm assuming thats the same as the $20 microsim that DSE et al sell.

Yes, it was totally painless.

My partner was told by 2degrees customer service to go and buy a new blank microsim, I'm assuming thats the same as the $20 microsim that DSE et al sell.

I went into the 2degrees store and they sold me a blank one for $5, so it must be different to the pre-connected one that you're thinking of. I called them at about 7:30am on Friday and the person who I spoke to was friendly and efficient and had the connection transferred over in a few minutes.

What city are you in? If you have a 2degrees store nearby then it would be easiest to make that your first port of call.

We're in palmy, and our 2degrees store has yet to to open (the signs are up though) lol.
Thanks for that, at least I know we don't have to get the whole new sim, and its a fair bit cheaper than getting a whole new one.
