I have Slingshot smart phone features and have discovered that the very useful feature called 'block unknown callers' which is very useful only works on numbers that have there caller ID blocked from within New Zealand.

This is sad they can't block international calls so it means I still get heaps of calls from scammers from asia phoning up to alert me to a virus issue with my computer or from global animal protection who want to do a survey about my full name, address, date of birth, place of birth, mother maiden name...

I phoned Slingshot and was told that can't do it but there system blocked 90% of unknown callers, which sounds great but is not the reality from my experience. I asked if I could block all international calls and was told that that was impossible too.

I find that very frustrating as the most annoying and criminal calls can't be blocked.

Any help of blocking these would be great.

My understanding is that all international numbers come in a format that would result in them blocking as "unknown", due to how they traverse the globe through various carriers, so it would be a block on All international numbers.
I imagine more people use this feature but do not want all international calls blocked than those that would prefer all numbers blocked, so they pass through.

An easy way to screen callers is to use the "Call Screening" option.

This will prompt callers to give their name to an IVR when calling you, then the IVR calls and gives you the recording and asks if you would like to receive it.

Afterhours you also have the "Do not Disturb" options to block callers.

These can be used in conjunction to achieve most desired levels of screening or blocking, though obviously not all scenarios are possible for us to implement.

I would like the option to block all international numbers. I have a cell phone for that kind of business.

That would be the easiest solution to stop these criminals.

Apologies for highjacking the thread, but in regards to this feature, re blocking unknown numbers, does that block all blocked/unlisted/private numbers in NZ? For instance if the Police called (which is usually private) would it refuse their call?

Yes it would if it originates from NZ, they will have to call you from a listed number.

In theory, yes, it would block the number.

That said, the police have ways around this and could contact us with a warrant in an emergency/life threatening situation (And do on occasion) and we help them contact you (presumably in this case by removing this restriction).

It wouldn't be effective at all, since many of these scam callers are interconnecting in NZ with some VoIP providers (who shall remain nameless) who are happy to provide services. For all intent purposes these calls aren't international.

because most times international will present 0000 or if they have blocked Caller ID (CLI) then it is excatly the same as local callers resticting their CLI

And so they could be blocked. I don't get international calls ever so blocking all international calls would be a win to me.

I would like valid number or the call doesnt get thru..

Been a while since I used my iTalk line, does it still just give a busy signal to people too chicken to show their number? Caused many many people to keep trying me back when I was taking calls.

Not always the case sometime we receive calls from Telecom that originated International that come with CLI prefix 64xxxxxxxx the only reason why I know this is international is I got one of these calls once and traced it.

Thanks
