So I've been a new customer with Snap for only about a month,

But the performance is actually pretty average,

Sure I get linespeed to "speedtest" testing servers in NZ,

But that's not a true indication of how good the connection is,

I can only pull about 1.5 MB/s from Microsoft for example, although some files (i.e the ATI 11.11 100mb drivers come down at 4.5 MB/s all the way, but more often then not the performance is not as good as Telecom's residential ADSL2 services..

Youtube is a bit of a joke, and the $2 addon actually seemed to make youtube slower,

Also, my phone services are still with Telecom, after more then 3 phone calls and 1 email sent through, I still havn't got my SIP connection

TBh downloading a single stream from an international source can't really go faster than that due to the limitations of TCP. If you want faster speeds you should use a download manager which can open up multiple streams. Try a torrent maybe to see how that compares speed wise.

I cannot speak to Snap performance but I have VDSL2+ with unleash and my connection speed is 70/10 and I am getting using a download manager 8MB/s from Microsoft Servers (Using Akami Download Manager).

On the whole I can sustain between 3.5MB/s and 6MB/s

Speedtest is actually a fair indication of the connection, since it is just downloading a file.

My suspicion is some less-than-ideal international routing going on (they do use TCL for international, after all

). What happens if you download from an NZ-based server?

We've got Snap VDSL2 here and I just downloaded a 700MB ISO at consistently above 5 MB/s (keeping in mind that the connection is heavily QoSed for VoIP) which is over 3x what we got on our ADSL2+.

I would recommend them for VDSL2+ if you "want your cake & get to eat it too."

TelstraClear Cable connections appear to be rate shaped in one way or another

The problem is Reach, which is Telstra's up stream, Telstra is Snaps upstream.

Per the thread above, Xnet customers are pulling 9 to 10mbit single threads on TCP from .us.

http://www.ispmap.co.nz/topmap.html - Xnet/WC is down stream from Vocus.

Unleash, as someone else has suggested, is also down stream from Vocus.

Seems either Snap has changed something or they had an issue which wasn't reported,

as for the 1st time since getting the service, I'm getting the BF3 update at 6 MB/s (watching my local area connection sats)

Will watch Snap's performance and see how it goes

Have that started moving more traffic over their Odessy upstream?

It really amazes me that people still trot this tired old line out. The RFC for TCP window scaling was released in May 1992. That is nearly TWENTY years ago. I think all the endpoints in the world have probably caught up by now.

It's because there is often small amounts of packet loss on the internet, especially when tcp/ip ramps up quickly, so the speed then drops.

There were plans out there to advertise how much data could go through each router in between.. but that seemed to not actually happen.

There are things like: http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-tcpm-proportional-rate-reduction-00 which could help.

Telstraclear did a bandwith upgrade during or prior to their unlimited period. This could be making a difference.

Thing is people should be able to pull 15 to 20 megabit down with a single thread. :)

In europe people can often do 40mbit to the US, with similar latency constraints.

i see internode have not only an auckland node on speed test now, but a san jose node too, and they're peering the san jose node via ape. so what speed do you get to san jose internode server? (it's routing via australia with 160 msec ping + connection to auckland latency)
