Ha yeah ... Was a tad frustrating, however BMarquis did reply, who does work at chorus (i forget where exactly ) so that's still a definite answer which is great to know.

With that, it's still an estimation, but often pretty accurate.

There is a reason rollback can be offered, it is because not every VDSL connection will be as good as ADSL down the same line - you have one of those lines.

Testing over WiFi adds additional speed variation possibilities as I and almost every other poster here has warned.

Your tests to an on-net speed test server are fast and stable

Your tests to off-net servers show some variation.

That is my current understanding of where we are. Let us know if you wish to roll back. Technically we cannot offer you VDSL upload on ADSL but I am sure you know that.

Just my luck unfortunately. At least I know what else to keep in mind when buying a house in the future (referring to the distance to the cabinet). Thank you for the conclusion FireEngine. I would like to stay on the VDSL for the remainder of the contract period. Im looking at possible running a cable from the modem to my room to eliminate the wifi factor... just need all the parts.

Haha and sadly I knew what the answer would be to that question, was worth a shot! Thanks for all the help/advice/opinions that you have provided throughout this thread.

hio77: alright, that zeus test looks perfect.

what i see here, is single threaded vs multi-threaded performance.

orcons speedtest app (which is basically speedtest.net) opens up multiple threads to hammer your connection, squeeze as much as it can out, because of this if wireless packets drop, lattency jiters etc your far less likely to notice jitters in the actual "download rate".

toss that dreaded ethernet cable you hate so much in, and give it a try on the zeus link again, it should go a bit more solid.

also to be fair, thats pretty rock solid.. clearly a bit of tcp scaling at the start.

Unfortunately the network usage monitor I was using is wrongly calibrated for LAN connections, as it reported the download speed was 5.2MB/s... but in Chrome it reported it as the expected 1.8-2.7MB/s download. The ethernet provided virtually the same download speeds as the wifi did but not to sure of the exact consistency as I didn't run the network usage monitor.

Jase2985: all i have to say is, stop doing any performance testing over wifi, you are adding another variable to the list. and its most likely hindering the performance you are seeing

but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your connection

i would still keep it over a roll back to adsl

Thank you, yup most definitely will be keeping it. Dont want to get the Chorus guy back in fear that he break my house more when he does the switch back.

ild do it again, with everything metering correctly, more for your own curiosity.

the chrome download counter is very bad at updating, as it goes with an average.

my connection will peg out at 6MB/s pretty instantly, and yet chrome will take a good 10~20 seconds to ramp up its counter to that.

on a graph however, its pretty obvious. ild watch in resource manager, or task manger at your connection stats and the graph, see how it goes.

the other half enjoys moving alot...

the fun of checking every potential address to insure im very likely to have a decent vdsl connection atlest!

this place just so happens to be covered so very well for vdsl, cabinet at each end of the road! each covering about equal halfs.

just the disappointment that there is all this useless ex-tesltra cable underground here, rather than ufb!

To true! You have the perfect setup there, I would love to find the location of my cabinet... all I know is that its about 900m away but in which direction, I don't know :/

somewhat in a deadzone, driving all of 2 mins down to road to see fiber installations happening!

the friendly orcon staff have clearly looked into it, so they would know, otherwise, pm me your address, and ill check what cabinet your on :)

Probably the most frustrating thing to see.
