I can confirm 3G via Vodafone in Hamilton also, can only test on 2100mhz as I don't have a 900mhz 3g phone

Oh really? Will have to check my 2d's phone when I get home. It's 2100mhz (and 850) as wel.

3G going as of this morning in Wellington CBD (Lambton Quay). Read Herald article and happened to soon after glance at phone and saw the good old '2Degrees 3G' words to lighten up my day!

In regards data packs, the following is what I hope for:

1. No time limit on usage,
2. No differentiation between mobile internet and mobile broadband - ie I can choose to use my data via my phone or through a USB stick, whatever I choose,
3. Sensible staggering of the data cap levels - ie not 100MB and then nothing until 3GB for example. Something along the lines of 100MB, 512MB, 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 10GB would capture the market. I can tether my phone, so provided they dont differentiate, I would happily buy into a 1 or 3GB pack.
4. Great pricing. Goes without saying, but something along the lines of 10c/MB at the lower end of the cap-scale moving towards 1c/MB at the upper end.

Well if there really is going to be some kind of 10GB mobile internet plan at a price us mortals can afford, It would be a MAJOR point of differance and a HUGE springboard for 2D into the business market.

It would also open up 2D to being an ISP as mobile only internet could fit in with a number of people.

OK, quick report of the meeting...

3G network is lit in most places, for testing. Their own technicians have been around the country doing their tests but they wanted more accurate usage patterns to start - so they have it running.

For example Wellington CBD was lit yesterday and they noticed 13% of the connections automatically switching to 3G. This is interesting because they currently don't sell 3G handsets.

The sad part is... they will be locking it down from end of next week. And we don't have a date for when the service goes live.

Their 3G network is paired with their current 2G network (meaning where you have a 2G site there will be a 3G site). Obviously different loads will make coverage different.

The 3G network is available in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, covering 48% of the population. Other areas, as we know is going to be covered by a roaming agreement with Vodafone.

There are plans in progress for additional network coverage, with Hamilton and Tauranga town planning in progress. Due to resource consent times and 3G release this won't happen until next year though.

No commercial details are available - plans, packs, national roaming.

New 3G handsets will come out (surprise) and Android devices. Micro SIM will be available "soon".

I was given a Huawei USB modem with a SIM card to test, but it will stop working when the network is locked again next week.

And that's all I have to say - nothing else was disclosed.

I am not surprised they didn't give you a date. But very disappointed this is not the start of permanent 3G. This is at odds with the Herald article from this morning - perhaps the Herald article was not from offical sources?

They just happen to be locking it down the day the iPhone4 is out and the guy who jumped ship to 2degrees mentioned that they would co-ordinate their 3G launch with the iPhone4. So me is wondering why...

How I see it working is 2d want to see what Telecom and VF have in their hands. When they make a move 2d will follow. They dont want to come in with a more expensive product then have to change the price next week just to compete... Well that is my view because it does not make any logical sense to take 3G down...

iPhone4 plans you mean?

I really really wish the market would stop differentiating between iPhone, Blackberry, mobile broadband, and mobile data plans. Data is data, anyway you cut it. The only difference is handset subsidies, which are normally laid bare anyway because they advertise an outright buy price.
