Just a quick test on a n97 mini shows 2D on 3.5g with 605kbits/sec and latency 1.08sec in the rural Tauranga area, at this point faster than XT on 365kbits/sec with 0.66 lat. Looking good for when they do finally go live, can't wait, might even make the switch from XT!!!

How this relates to real world speeds is unknown but would expect at least half that. So either 2degrees haven't enabled HSPA+ yet as they appear to be in a testing phase, or whats probably more likely is that 2degrees just don't have the transmission capacity to their sites, as most of the sites I've driven past are using Microwave Links, similar to vodafone, where as telecom have fibre and unlimted capacity, microwvae links are very limited and could be somewhere between 34Mbit/s (16x2E1 PDH) or 155Mbit/s (STM-1 SDH).

I recall reading somewhere that the majority of their sites in CHC are connected via fiber due to a deal 2degrees made with a local fiber company.

In AKL it seems to be a mixture -- I know of several sites which don't have microwave links so must be fed by fiber. One site for example is co-located with Telecom so 2degrees might be sharing their fiber link.

Not sure of WLG but I guess slightly more fiber due to the geography not being suited to microwave links.

About 20 percent of 2degrees’ sites are connected by fibre, and Goss says it will be a multi-year programme replace microwave technology with fibre. He sees great potential in the government’s ultra fast broadband network to deliver fibre to 2degrees’s cellsites

Telecom already has every cellsite connected to fibre, and Vodafone is upgrading its fibre connectivity, however Nick Read points out that 2degrees’s microwave technology has greater capacity than its rivals’ legacy microwave technology.

it will be interesting to see how many sites the Vodafone deal with Telecom will cover. If i was Vodafone i would be aiming for about the same numbers as Telecom on fibre especially for $150million!

but also microwave radio can now do up to 1 Gig without going to the crazy big long haul radios so it isn't like you are going to need fibre everywhere. Also the latency on microwave is still very low, e.g. <1ms RTT crossing the full width of Auckland

I was looking at doing a deal with one of the NZ Wireless 'fibre' companies. Was it HP? Anyway they have an impressive product. 10/100mps (100 boost) for around $400/mo /unlimited bandwidth.

you can buy small unlicensed spectrum wireless and laser point to point links from a number of suppliers and then its just a one off cost and nothing a month.

An engineer and I read it was about 6 - What do you know I don't?
