falconnz: Its interesting, I just tested the same servers you did, it was a few hours after you but that should give me worse results as around now is getting up to maxamim usage.
Sounddude:Athlonite: and yet ten days on and we still get this sort of thing
seems trafic to london is now going via purgatory LOL (look at the ping)
You're based in Nelson rigjht? Its probably the Telecom UBS connection you have and the Telecom backhaul back to Orcon thats at fault.
Everyone else seems to be having great speeds.
BazNZ: Latency is the problem for me when gaming on International Servers. I'm getting the stop/start bandwidth bursts which most gamers would realise is impossible to play with. I'm not seeing on my monitor what is actually happening in real time. I'm missing shots and getting killed in game because of it. I know what speeds I should be getting and I'm not. To Chicago I should consistently get 3000-3200kbs Download and 400 - 450kbs upload with a ping between 203 - 210. I had this for years without any problems whatsoever with multiple Modems/Routers used so I know it's not my current Orcon Home Hub. It's gotta be Orcon's service? I've had this problem since April/May this year with mixed results in the past couple of months up and down. I'm in Hamilton and on Orcon's ADSL1 Purple Plan MAX/MAX. I'm currently not getting what I'm paying for. Last month with Home Phone/Tolls/Broadband etc.. etc.. my bill was $160 now if these terrible speeds and latency continue I'm better of paying Telecom or Vodafone $90 a month for the same Service and plan and save myself some dosh.
Out of the blue I received an email from Orcon stating that they had upgraded the connection in my local area this morning.
This was at about 5pm local, so not peak time, but... I haven't seen a figure that high ever.
*fingers crossed*

Same here,im changing to telstra in about 3 weeks when my contract finishes.
Silverwolf: Hi,
I've had this problem for the last 6 weeks, my problem at first was that I couldn't download fast AT ALL off alot of international sites my speeds for downloading were 50-150kb/s. Previously I could get over 500kb/s off files individually with a combined maximum of 1200kb/s.
2 weeks afterwards I decided to give them a ring (as previously it usually cleared up after a while), my call consisted of resetting my router, checking the phone plugs in the house, all that kind of non-sense when I've already tried it (Network Admin in real life). After about an hour they ended up telling me that telecom has changed the exchange back down to ADSL1 and I was previous getting ADSL2 speeds.
Now theres a few problems with this "theory" as even basic ADSL1 speeds back before 2 years ago were greater then 200kb/s, also the fact that later that night I was getting high speeds again as normal. It resumed as an on and off thing for about a week then I noticed a pattern, during the day the speeds were absolutely crap then after 1am they would shoot way back up. This lasted until last week when it has been all over the place as if I'm being throttled.
Even as I'm writing this right on 1:00am my speeds just went straight back up heres my speedtest.net results,
My normal results are always between 11,000 to 13,000 downstream, the upstream has always remained around 800-950 with no problems whatsoever.
Here are my router stats.
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 11301 kbps 951 kbps Line Attenuation 26 db 6 db Noise Margin 12 db 11 db
What do you all think about this? Oh and I live in Sumner, Christchurch and am on the Orcon@Home Purple plan w/full downstream and upstream.
EDIT 1:20am
It seems I spoke too soon, my download is higher then 150kb/s but even with the 9700 Downstream the speeds are below half of what I normally get. Here is a tracert to www.google.com then one to a rapidshare server.

Edit 4:00am
Speed has dramatically gone up, was downloading one file off rapidshare at 120kb/s (see below for picture), and stable at 1428kb/s on 2 files together. Here is the speedtest.net results now.
I have no doubts that this won't stay at these speeds for the rest of the day. Will most likely drop to below 200kb/s after lunch. While I have the chance I'll add a picture of my flashget download off a rapidshare server, it was stable at this speed.
