BarTender:

skewt: I would be annoyed too if I spent hours diagnosing why my inbound connections weren’t working only to find out my ISP broke it by switching the connection to CGNAT.

I can understand why they didn’t want to email everyone but they could at least gone middle ground and placed it on the service status page - unfortunately ISPs seem to have an aversion to using those

The main issue with having comms is it confuses oldies and non-technical people and generates a whole lot of calls into the helpdesk for no reason.

Doing a google for "what is my ip" and then comparing it against the IP on the WAN interface and seeing they are different then you know something is up. I would hope it wouldn't take hours to figure out.

I only knew about it when I asked on gz slack. I had no idea why my wan address was different from my public address. Nor did I know that an100.xx.sumthing was a special type of private address.

So it took me a couple of hours to work it out and find out what was happening. A simple “there are some changes coming, come looks here” would have sufficed. Thankfully a solution was also quickly found by talking to 2Deg.

Yesterday my game server suddenly dropped out, only today i realised it was this. Rung up 2D and they gave me a static IP. Is anyone else having slow speeds tonight? Only hitting 70 Mb/s on a 100 plan

No mine is still reporting 20 up 102 down. Same plan.

Which is exactly what @michaelmurfy has been saying people should be doing.

I got moved to CGNAT and a quick call to 2Degress sorted it.  Static IP :)

However, now when I run a speedtest, it thinks I'm based in Auckland rather than Wellington (although if I manually redirect back to a Wellington server I get the usual low 1 ms ping - and Auckland gives me more like 9-10ms).  Speed seems to have dropped  too - sometimes I'm getting only 500 Mbps on a wellington based server (1gig plan).

@NickMack - this looks a little like what @Kodiack was experiencing?

Here are the similar traceroutes:

traceroute to speedtest.xtreme.net.nz (203.171.32.30), 30 hops max, 52 byte packets

@stocksp that's different than what I was experiencing. My issue was seemingly with WIX peering not behaving correctly for a couple of days. Your issue is likely that your CG-NAT IP address is classified as being Auckland-based. When I first switched to a static IP, sites like Speedtest.net thought I was based in Tauranga despite being in Wellington. IP geolocation isn't perfect, especially in something like a CG-NAT configuration.

Then that'd be the same issue I ran into before. It may update on its own after several days, particularly if you have devices with GPS enabled connected to your network. Alternatively, you can request that your info is updated on GEOIP databases. Some more info here:

I don't think a lot of poeple are having a problem with the resolution....it's the detecting the problem in the first place with no notification (and who goes randomly reading FAQs for no reason).

Anyone going to 2degrees should know that static IPs are typically charged for, but 2degrees may sometimes use their discretion to waive the charges. I don't think they hand out static IPs free to anyone who asks.

So sign up over the phone or in-store and tell them why you need a public IP? If they say no, don't proceed with the order!

The issue with Speedtest and Static IPs is it does depend on if the Static IPs are regional or national.

If you have a x.x.x.10 in Auckland and x.x.x.11 in Invercargill as the whole subnet is global for Static IPs it is *very* hard for Speedtest and Maxmind/Google and other geolocation providers to determine where you physically are as they "tend" to lump all IPs based on a coarse range (such as /24 or /22 or even larger) to determine location.

So I think this could be a consequence of Static IPs and the way ISPs provision them. I know that is how Spark provisions them as they have their "National Static IP for Retail Fixed and Mobile Broadband virtual network" which all Static IP addresses are allocated from irrespective of the location. All static Spark customers get sent to the Auckland CDNs and the geo-location is tagged in Auckland even though they are in a different location. The other option would be to have geo-specific Static IPs, which is far from ideal when people move between locations and want to keep the same IP. I would be surprised if 2degrees did anything different than Spark but it does depend on how the MPLS core (assuming they are using MPLS) has been configured and I don't know how they configured it.
