I was not able to watch a low quality standard def ustream on slingshot. Opened the VPN to Luxembourg and it was a little better. plug into the flatmates xtra connection and it was perfect.

Yeah, I'm getting max 2MBps internationally on a Friday morning. I'm cabinetised and my line syncs at 16Mbps. Friends of mine on orcon were getting 5MBps+ downloading from the same server at the same time.

I've submitted a speed-related ticket via help.slingshot.co.nz; I fully expect them to be unable to resolve it, at which point I will leave and refuse to pay their early disconnection fee.

Amiga500: Yeah, I think I'll try Snap, and switch the VoIP line to WxC. Inspire.net doesn't do naked DSL and they sponsor Kiwiblog -- and I don't want to buy anything from someone who freely associates themselves with the open sewer that is the Kiwiblog comments section. I only got told about Slingshot's reputation for slamming after I joined, otherwise I'd have gone somewhere else and would never have ended up in this mess.

Orcon's "best deal ever" would be great if I wanted a physical landline but I haven't had one since January 2005 :-)

darkcon: I've noticed all the people who were defending slingshots god aweful speeds have stopped posting in this thread, when I originally posted here, I had a ton of people giving me the same old regurgitated crap like "international bandwidth is expensive", which has nothing to do with this topic, 220kbit/sec on a 8mbit/sec line...totally no excuse for that.

My speed is just fine...*cough*1MB/s*cough* international most of the time, even torrents.

Oh forgot to stop my download which was going at around 250KB/sec also, lol.

So I guess that's the sort of current intl speed anyways.

Dam outage yesterday sux0red!

darkcon: what town you in? cause in Rotorua no one gets good slingshot speeds?

North Shore, Auckland.

If it's cached, speed usually goes upto 1.8MB/s, without cache and international always maxed at 1MB/s.

Bandwidth has been choppy lately (Tauranga). My VOIP calls stink, and they TOTALLY throttle the off hours traffic. Just after 8am, the traffic speeds triple.

Off course they throttle off peak traffic. what did you expect? your getting it for free if they didnt throttle it the network would crash.

When i open Safari or Firefox my speeds are so poor it struggles to open the first page.....
Just lately its awful just basic browsing in the evening seems to be a real chore.

You're not getting it for free. It's an advertised part of your plan, it's a consideration when you choose between ISPs. ISPs don't pay anyone per gigabyte of data transferred so your network utilisation does not translate into a direct cost. If they have idle network capacity, e.g. early in the morning, than using that would not incur any meaningful marginal cost.

Personally, I'd be willing to pay an ISP extra for uncharged offpeak traffic. Just not quite the $5 for a few nights that snap charge (IIRC).

I get fine speeds international and national. Haven't had a problem with SS the 4 or 5 months I've been with them.

I also use a VPN during the offpeak hours to bypass ALL throttling :) can easily get 400gb+ a month
