Anyone know how I can get an accurate mesurement of how far I am from my exchange ?
b0rg: I've seen a friend living 2km from one exchange being connected to another 5km away from him.
b0rg: Exchange locations are not made public for security reasons, so even if they know, they can't tell you, and even if they tell you, you have no right to call your ISP and say you should be getting higher speeds because a) you shouldn't know, b) you could be wrong, c) the way the cable lies could mean that althoguh you are physically close, your link travels a long way, and d) I've seen a friend living 2km from one exchange being connected to another 5km away from him.
Hope this helps.

When i was working at Telecom they had a broadband check team. We would send an email to them and they would put the customer's address , phone number and email into a spread sheet. This spreadsheet would find their nearest exchange and based on that calculate exactly how far someone was from the exchange , and what approximate stats the customer should be getting based on that distance. They would then CC me and also email it back to the customer . I don't recall ever having to give them a distance so I assume they can calculate that.
I'm not sure if they still have it but I guess you can con a willing sales rep into getting an email off to them by saying to them you want to check what stats you'll get if you did swap over to Xtra Broadband but wanted this checked first. Tell them you would consider changing your tolls over as well since when I was working at Telecom this was counted as 3 sales units (1 for the BB and 2 for swapping the tolls over). Which means they should try their darndest to get this information to you. Make it clear tho that until you get this broadband check email then you do not want to swap your tolls over. God knows I've had to swap customers back to Telecom overs Slingshots conned some poor elderly residents to Telecom many a time !

I'll try again tommorow, but um the lady at telecom I spoke to didnt mind doing it, she asked for my number. She then said she cant get any information on the number at all. She asked if my phoneline was through telecom and I said no, then she said that's why my phone number won't display any data on her screen, but I'll call tommorow again anyways.
Athlonite: yeah i've seen the excel sheet of that highly cryptic took me 1/2hr just work out where napier was then it was a simple mater of matching the area to the exchange
Common sense is not as common as you think.
