I had really good service in Wellington this year with them before I moved to Auckland.

You're ovbiously on a Slingshot ULL connectiion. They run their DSLAM's with a 6 dBm noise margin, vs the 12 dBm that Chorus use. This results in slightly faster sync speeds but the ability to cope with noise is significantly reduced which can result in reduced stability of the DSL connection.

Speedtest.net results with local traffic have never been an issue - most of those that complain about Slingshot have issues with their international capacity.

Has anyone noticed recently the massive drop in speeds over the last week.

I live in CHCH and my speeds have dropped from 1.8 megabytes/sec to anywhere between 100 - 500 KB/s for browsing and HTTP downloading internationally.

Is this related to the new $60 unlimited plan? I'm not on it, I'm on the 250GB one...

Regards,

Hi guys,

We have designed AYCE to use a completely separate bandwidth pool to our limited plans, so this will be unrelated.

If you PM me your phone number I will look up your individual account and see if anything jumps out.

Cheers

Adrian

Also, 75% of the Exchanges that we have unbundled are outside of Auckland, so we are certainly taking a nationwide approach to our network build - not just focusing on Auckland.

Cheers,

Adrian

I am not complaining about the overall speed which is pretty satisfactory.
I am complaining about the fact that http download sites like rapidshare, fileserve, etc are pure and simply throttled to around 200kB/s regardless of the connection speed and even though I am not on the AYCE plan.

This seems to have started about 1 or 2 weeks ago. (Sadly just after I signed up for a further 12 month...)

Slingshot apply traffic management to all plans, they even state this on their website. Unlimited uses a different bandwidth pool, but capped plans still have traffic management.

Basically you signed up for the cheapest ISP for large data and you thought un-cached international downloads that Slingshot class as "unattended/filesharing" lowest priorty for traffic management was going to be fast?

I'm afraid that's called "unrealistic expectations".

Well this was the case about 2 weeks ago. I could then download at about 800kB/s...

200 Kilobytes/sec could still be about 500GB/month...

remember ISPs pay for total aggregate bandwidth.

Slingshot has very cyclical performance, they bring on-stream more international transit...things will look good for awhile and get progressively worse until they are really bad and they have to buy more again.

They purchased additional x international bandwidth this month and won't add more for the the next y months but will add z new customers between now and y.

Because their prices are lower, they undoubtedly have a worse contention ratio on international than other ISP's.

Low price average performance is their business model.
