Is there any way we can find out when/if Genius plans will be available for the various exchanges around the country? I am currently on one of the older non-genius plans and would really like to change but always get denied. I have even had the address checker tell me it was available at one point only to be called a few days after putting the order in to say it wasn't available. Waiting for fibre isn't an option as we are just outside the deployment zone.

Hi Vaark

We currently are unable to support Genius in Greymouth.

Sorry about that :(

Is it because Genius requires EUBA or LLU connections?

Yes

We also have to have equipment in the local exchange to support the local phone numbers. Greymouth is an area which we currently don't.

PeerApp isn't going to help much with downloads via SFTP/FTPS, HTTPS, NNTP over SSL though... those will have to be shaped via DPI/flow matching heuristics to stop downloaders running wild.

Yes very true, but we don't see a huge amount of that type of traffic currently.

Orcon dudes - can u confirm that you don't do any traffic shaping on Genius plans for SSL to UseNet (Astraweb)?

I have an open case with your support team for 'slow downloads' ever since I moved to Genius a week or so ago.  As soon as I put the Genius router in place my downloads have dropped from ~1MB/s to ~300KB/s.  And it is very 'bursty' - swinging from 0KB/s to about 300KB/s all the time - and this in now over a weeks worth of monitoring the performance.  I used to get a pretty constant 900K-1M with Seimens HomeHub & LLU.

Any ideas?

Another question - should the in-line DSL filter be removed from my de-mark point on the outside of the house now I'm on Genius?

Cheers,
G.

No reason to remove the filter which will be isolating your DSL line/jack from the rest of your phone wiring.

Regarding traffic management would love to see updated version of these for 2012 after the changes for the unlimited plan:

hmm those a very outdated. They were made when we used old Cisco SCE equipment.

Will see what I can do, but fairly busy so no promises!

I'm also using the Genius modem and the only time I have issues with usenet on Orcon is when Astraweb is crapping out. Other than those times its 24/7 @ max line speed.

I have a Question for anyone from Orcon

how is it you can call the unlimited account unlimited when it clearly states it's limited by the "Fair Use Policy"..... Can we get some feedback on what Orcon considers "Fair Use" how many GB's a month does Orcon consider fair use

And my Genius switch over is due to happen on Thursday so will report back here on how it all goes

they won't tell you, but one has to imagine that since Orcon have previously had a 1TB plan, but have opted to call this plan unlimited instead of 1TB, then the fair use MUST be considerably higher than 1TB per customer.

It will be pretty interesting to see how much people can 'get away with'.  Theoretical maximum on a 100Mbps connection maxed 24/7 is (I think) around 30TB per month

Go!

I would say it's probably worked out on some average user per month usage

but still if a plan is called unlimited it should be just that no fair use bull pucky should be involved at any time

otherwise the plan should be called limited fair use
