Digmarx: I've recently joined 2degrees on the $39/mo plan specifically for the 1gb/mo for a year data perk, and today I got an email informing me that it's been extended to 2 years.

I was getting the 1gb pack before they started giving it for free. When I switched to getting it free, it was either different or I assumed that it was just the same as what I was paying for.

This will make life easier!

My point exactly, by saying that it's free for a limited time they are in fact loosing customers. Also by not committing to this as part of the plan; it is considered a promotion.

I was at a BYO the other week and found out that 2 of my friends work for vodafone, I asked them if they could get me a better deal. What they told me was that the 2degrees plan is only a promotion and that I should not count on the 1GB being free.

Also on websites like NBR and plan comparison websites they ignore the 1GB promotion and compare plans on the non promotional offer.

IMO there should be a bonus, but the bonus should get bigger on the more that you pay.

a few possibilities for why they might have 'bonus' things.

1) it sounds great. they say "we are the only network that gives you bonus data and bonus minutes"
2) it gives them more room to remove it should people start using more data than they predicted and they need to reduce the caps. It;s easier to extend the offer than it is to change a fundamental component of the plan. This is what Vodafone did with their smart plans last year which previously had 'free' 3Gb of bonus data.
3) it makes it easier to sell the more epxensive plans to customers "If you want more data permanently you will need to buy a larger plan."
4) the bonus minutes don't carry over, meaning the impact of having carry over minutes is very small since most people will either not accrue any (if they are eating into their bonus minutes it means their normal minutes are gone and so won't carryover), or will acrrue minutes they will never use. (if they are accruing minutes then they are not even touching their bonus minutes, meaning they are very unlikely to get through their bonus minutes to eat into their carried over minutes.)
5) competitors are less likely to respond meaningfully to something they perceive is a temporary promotion

the downside being the reasons others have posted, such as price comparisons in the media tend to ignore it's effect, some customers choosing not to buy because of the uncdertianty about what will happen after the promo period is over, and just general increase in confusion about what people are actually getting for the price.

Got the email today too. Thanks 2degrees.

Edit: I am not sure it is doing much for their ARPU. Got a usb modem and shared my data with it to finally get my mum off dialup.

Excellent work 2Degrees.
Interestingly when I connect my Nokia N8 to laptop & use Ovi to get a connection it tells me and dials vodafone, with a 460.8 kbps speed. Location is East Tamaki, dark blue on the 2degrees coverage map.
