Well I suppose Vodafone LAC doesn't mean much to me. I did a little search - and it appears that a LAC is a group of suburubs. I just struggle to understand why Piha and Stanmore bay can roam but not out this way.
Does that mean that it's included in Henderson or something which does have coverage?
I think 2degrees really have to be outted for saying that they roam onto vodafone's network when outside of coverage areas and then only doing that in rural areas!

under my general understanding, if you get your phone enabled for roaming you can go to australia and make phone calls like you normally would. if you went to australia and could only make phone calls within the central city that'd confuse me. That's not how roaming works.?
so when roaming differs from what is expected, and is only optionally enabled it seems to contradict general expectations of a reasonable coverage area.
it's kind of like having a toll service on your landline which can only ring Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin - you call Palmerston North and you're out of luck. sure you can get another landline, and another toll service to ring other cities - but then you have to have two phone numbers, and make sure you're using the right one.
Surely it's the responsibility of the provider and not customer to organise interconnect agreements for the other areas.
I think in a way - what's needed is to not only have roaming between 2degrees/vodafone. But to telecom's network as well, maybe as an add-on service. And telecom should also be able to roam onto vodafone. So that there can be total NZ coverage for cellphones.
Kind of like how vodafone use telecom wholesale adsl ports for areas that they don't have local loop unbundling.
Ok so, Wikipedia says that there is an estimated population of 4,430,400 people in New Zealand - giving 132,912 population that can't get 2degrees coverage.
Laingholm is said to have 2490 population in 2006, Woodlands Park probably has about the same - so there's only about 50 suburbs with little to no coverage? (well I suppose there's probably quite a few places with less population too)
Woodlands Park is under Waimai which NZ stats shows as 2010 estimated population 2550. So yeah about the same population.
Surely these areas are populated enough to be worth covering?
For Dunedin central or all of Dunedin? What about Mosgiel? I mean - I don't know where 2degrees coverage is and isn't. I just know that it seemed to work okay in Christchurch, but seems pretty patchy in Auckland. I realise Auckland is a lot more spread out than Christchurch. But I do remember that roaming works fine in Stanmore Bay but seems to not work properly in Titirangi/Woodlands Park/Laingholm,
As I explained earlier, roaming is excluded in locations where 2degrees coverage extends across an entire Vodafone LAC. The Vodafone LAC that covers Titirangi is also served by 2degrees coverage, though, like any network, it has it's deadspots. The Titirangi area is famous for it's spotty coverage: the local geography was, it seems, not designed with radio propagation in mind. However that LAC also covers a very large portion of West Auckland and so it is excluded regardless of small areas of low signal in the Titirangi area.
In other areas, the 2degrees coverage does not cover an entire Vodafone LAC. In Dunedin the Vodafone LAC is geographically very large, so if we disabled roaming on it, there would be a wide ring around the city where there would be no coverage. This is why Vodafone roaming is still allowed in Dunedin, and the same reasoning applies in other areas where roaming is allowed. In all these places our coverage will extend, and sometimes Vodafone may rearrange their LAC boundaries for us. If either of those happen such that an area can be excluded, it will be.
Roaming cannot be enabled or disabled on a per-cell basis. The network simply doesn't work that way.

For those attacking it's well worth thinking about how you would reaact in roaming was enabled within the LAC's and you suddenly found that things like data suddenly cost more and had handover issues, along with a singnificant increase in call drops as your phone continually jumped between networks.
I'd put my money on people in here bashing 2degrees wanting the nework changed to stop this from happening...
