2DegreesCare:So has this only happened with the new Snapper SIM or was it the same with the previous one too?
I only had the phone a couple of days with the normal sim and it worked fine. The snapper sim worked fine for a half day or so and then this morning I noticed the problems. I couldn't say conclusively if it was the sim or not.

I've had to factory reset the phone twice now, after automatic app installs, to get the 3G back working. I'm wondering if it's an app i've installed which is causing a conflict? I don't remember installing anything with those sorts of permissions so will reinstall the ones I REALLY need over the next couple of days and see if one causes a problem more than the others.

Update: I've been up in napier this weekend and noticed the little 'r' symbol denoting that I was roaming and thought I might try a restart to see if it would exhibit the same connection problems but it did not.

So if I'm connected to the 2degrees mobile data network and restart my phone it won't reconnect to data. If I'm on a roaming network, Vodafone I presume, and I restart the phone it reconnects to mobile data fine.

It feels more sim related than hardware now...?

Update 2: Just got back to Wellington and tried a Vodafone sim in the phone and it works as expected.

It seems as though it is a sim related problem and I will try and get a replacement tomorrow.

I have always had an intermittent problem that my phone would occasionally forget it could connect to data. First with a Nexus One, now (only once so far) with an S3, different sims. In both cases it would pick up again after switching to flight mode and back or disabling data. I figured it was something on 2degrees's end, since a friend had essentially the same issue. It was never quite frequent enough for me to bother doing anything about it. It wasn't reliably repeatable the way it seems to be for you, but otherwise it sounds like the same symptoms.
