Instinct:
jamesrt: I thought I'd throw my $0.02 into the ring, and state that I've just moved TO Orcon/Genius, and I couldn't be happier.

I was using Telecom for homeline and another ISP for broadband (40Gb/month, effectively); now for the same $$$ (actually, slightly less), I've got 200Gb/month; my download speed has trippled, my upload speed is 6x faster; and I finally (after more than 10 years of hounding Telecom) get Caller-ID on my home phone.

I, for one, am very happy to have made this move.  I did have to ring the Support line to get my voicemail tweaked the way I wanted to, but they were quick to answer the phone, very helpful, and the required work carried out in seconds.

There will always be people with bad experiences, I'm not ignoring that - just trying to point out that there can be good experiences as well.

I'm really pleased you have a good story to tell and I wish you all the best with Orcon. Hopefully you continue to get great response times from the Customer Service team. I usally give up waiting after 15mins.. I have waited over 30 mins (on several occasions) and got cut off at 8pm when the contact centre closed.

The Genius is not a bad set up for most people but it is not the best option for some. I guess I'm just one of the 'some' :-)
I live in a 3 level home with multiple phones around the house. The hub in the middle of the house were a genius router would be placed is in a cupboard under the stairs in the middle floor. It is totally impracticle to have phone under the stairs in a cupboard, hence the need for me to keep POTS and avoiding the need to buy 5 new phones.

Um you do realize you can feed all the phones in your house via Genius using the normal sockets right? Just need a master filter or star wiring. Master Filter can be retrofitted to virtually any phone wiring and newer houses come (or should come if we didn't have such crap electricians) with star wiring.

I was talking the other day about publishing releases notes for firmware to ubergeeknz, and I guess from the general lack of understanding with configuring VOIP in the home, Orcon should setup a simple tech guide / site to how VOIP works and what you can do to replicate your old POTS analogue setup using the newer digital VOIP setup.

Hey thanks ubergeeknz the information you sent out in your post is really great I have learned a lot and will look at how I can implement at home.

How much does it cost to get someone in to set that up though? I may consider genius when my next contract rolls over. the free nationwide calling is definitely an advantage, although I am currently also getting that on my regular line at the moment, but will end after the contract runs out.

It has to be good for someone. Looks like you're it. :-)

I was happy enough with Orcon (7 years?) until they required the landline before they would ANYTHING else....

I am *this* close to moving ISP's

at least once a week I come home to find my "Genius" connection has died, rebooting the router dosnt help, it comes back up later by itself.  I have not had a single reply to a support case i lodged with them 3 weeks ago.  Customer service is non existant

I've received a message from one of your team regarding my issue today, thanks for following it up anyway

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Hi all,

Stupid question, I gave my 30-day notice which comes ends the 27-July-2012, but my Orcon billing period ends 22-July-2012...

Will I need to pay Orcon the full amount for the next month after 22nd even though I will switch to Telecom on the 27th? i.e better to switch to Telecom 22nd of August.

I asked in another thread and it appears that you can leave part way through a billing period and should be charged a part period, just as you would if you changed plans in the middle of a billing period.

If in doubt, send an e-mail to support@orcon and they should be able to tell you how it works.

Hi there,

You will only be charged up until the 27th of July, 2012. On your next invoice (due out next week) you should only see charges from the 23rd of July, 2012 to the 27th of July, 2012 (so only paying a partial month's service).

If you'd like to send me a PM with your account details I'd be more than happy to confirm this for you.

Cheers,

Cam
