You have to decide how important the POTS service is to you.

1. Very important - POTS must work all the time, even when main powers is lost and/or the DSL is down.

- go to Telecom or one of the other ISPs with a competitive POTS+internet option.

2. POTS is not the most important thing, but sometimes I need a local phone number people can call and I really don't want to mess around with setting up ATAs, VOIP phones and/or VOIP software. However I don't mind being locked into having a certain modem type and perhaps a longer contract than some of the other options.

- go for the Genius option from Orcon.

3. POTS is not important at all - I only use the mobile or Skype these days and I prefer my own choice of modem.

- go for a true Naked DSL offering.

4. Not the most important thing, but I would like to have a local number, my own choice of modem and don't mind messing around with the VOIP configuration.

- go Naked DSL and then add VOIP from 2Talk or another provider of your choice.

No doubt there are a few other options.
Perhaps someone might like to make a flowchart?

Athlonite: Yeah I hear you I'm still waiting for them to make a decision one way or the other about increases to the DATA plans for those of us not on "genius"

I'll give orcon this they do have the full six pack of cans but they just lack the plastic thingy to hold them all together ....

Orcon made it clear I could not change my data plan AT ALL unless I moved my Telecom land line to Genius.

I didn't want that....so I took the lot to Telecom.

My Telecom landline and 160GB / month costs me $105.

I signed up for landline and 60GB for $105 early last year, but they gave me a bonus 20GB (total of 80GB) just for signing........and then in May this year they doubled the 80GB to 160GB....for the same $105.

Rang Telecom and signed up to the $75 deal on their website on Monday night. It will be installed Thursday.

Yes the "2 rings" was after making a selection in the IVR (that should have just been assumed yes???) It may have been a sales line, but still I was impressed with the service. I talked to an obviously middle aged NZ lady who was very friendly and knew how to answer my questions and do her job quickly and efficiently. All the details were explained and the whole process was very quick.

- previously I wouldn't touch Telecom with a mile long barge pole but it does seem they have changed and improved things lately so I shall give them a chance...
So far I am very impressed but the next challenge: can they actually perform the switch over on Thursday and with minimal outage?

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

Its on their website at the moment. but briefly:

30GB data
1 free call NZ landline or mobile
free modem
free connection
2 months free
12 month contract

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

I found the same thing in 2004 after being with TelstraSaturn/Clear for 6 years.

Telecom's customer service had HUGELY improved once National got the boot in 1999 and it became clear that under Labour they faced being split up. Until then, National's defacto protection (I'm looking at you, Maurice Williamson) of their market share / monopoly gave Telecom little reason to improve.
