GlowyHoein: Located in Epsom suburb

Unfortunately without knowing an exact street that's not a lot of help.

Are you in a 10Mbps zone according to the Chorus SAT? If you are then there is probably a 90% chance your speed issues are related to poor internal wiring.

Are you cabinetised? If you are are you sure you're not on a ULL plan? If you are on ULL and have been cabinetised you will need to move to a wholesale plan which may result in a price increase.

Unfortunately nobody can answer these questions for you..

In the Epsom area there could be more than one exchange you might be connected to, depending on your address. For example, at the city end of Gillies Avenue you might be on the Remuera exchange, but further south on that same road, you would be on the Mt Eden exchange. With attenuation of 48 dB (downstream) and 27 dB (upstream) you are probably not close to an exchange or cabinet and/or you have excessive loss due to other factors (e.g. cable faults or house wiring).

To give a comparison, I'm near the fringe of the Auckland Central exchange area - one street further and I'd be on a ADSL/VDSL cabinet. My attenuation figures are 36 dB (downstream) and 20.5 dB (upstream) and I'm getting about 8 Mbits/s downstream line rate. Your attenuation figures are worse than mine - and as I mentioned, I'm not far from the edge of the exchange area.

Oops, I thought Epsom had to be in the Mt Eden exchange area, but I'm at the fringe of the Mt Eden exchange area at Onslow Ave in a VDSL2 area (green colour), but supposedly my cabinet is no more than 50m from my house.

I have no clue about what ULL exchanges and wholesale connections means though.

judging by your attenuation you're probably on unbundled.  because you  have a cabinet nearby you should get orcon to move you onto the cabinet, then you should get 16megabit+.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Do I just ask Orcon to move me from an unbundled to a wholesale connection over the phone? Is it that easy? Is there anyway to confirm that I am not on a wholesale connection already?

I'd say that from your attenuation, it's almost impossible for you to be on a wholesale connection (ADSL connected from the cabinet), because if you are that close to the cabinet, your line stats should look much better. Give Orcon a call and explain the situation - your download speed, your line stats / attenuation and your address - and the fact that according to the Chorus maps, your neighbours in Onslow Ave should already be on a ADSL/VDSL cabinet.

GlowyHoein: Hi all,

I'm an orcon customer using Orcon Genius (with the Orcon router), over the past few days I've been experiencing a massive drop in quality of service for my internet connection.

Previously I had upwards of 1.4Mbits/s, but according to orcon genius's data, my internet speed is now 819kb/s for download.

Furthermore this is my result according to a speedtest.net:

For a NZ server the ping is off the charts and so is the speed.

A few more tests

My internet at it's best

I have called in Orcon today and asked for help from the tech department, the best they could attempt was a line reset which did not help at all.

I'm wondering if anyone can help me resolve this problem? But this is really starting to annoy me with the poor service, I'm wondering if other ISPs might be better.

Extra information for the initiated:

upstream
Noise margin: 9dB
Attenuation 27dB

downstream: 6dB
Attenuation 48dB

Genius is a naked broadband package so in theory you should not be getting a dial tone on your phone line. This being the case the genius modem should be the only device connected to your phone line.
Getting your installation right vital to ensure you get a quality service. Your are shelling out at least $840 per year for your service and you may be on a contract if you have opted for the free modem deal so I would strongly recommend you have a professional come in and check out your setup. It could well be the difference between getting a good reliable service or spending the next few months attempting to contact customer service to get things fixed and then griping in these forums that your connection is bad and the ISP is no help at all.
If your homes internal wiring has faults or is not setup correctly for the service you subscribe to you will have problems regardless of ISP.
When we first shifted into our current house I spent some time and a few dollars replacing the wiring and to date we have enjoyed a high quality service with near maximum connect speeds.
Now I realise this will not be the case for everybody as there are a lot of other factors that will have an effect on line speed and performance but ensuring that your house wiring is not one of these factors in my opinion is money well spent.
