SamF: Why do we all want DLM-1? Latency!! 1ms is 8 times better than 8ms! :)

And 16 times better than DLM3 I'm currently "stuck" on :p

TBH I am very happy with performance on VDSL, but there is that little voice in the back of my head that keeps saying I was getting local pings of 12-13ms on ADSL, which went up to 20ms when I went to VDSL(DLM2) and is now 36ms on DLM3.

Also curious whether DLM is "working" properly given some of the seemingly strange behaviour folk have noted on here.

I don't think we even understand that figure fully. It seems like its part of the QOS built into the network from what I have read in that VDSL white paper.

Dual Latency for improved QOS
It is well known that different user applications have different physical layer QoS requirements with regard to data rate, latency, bit error rate and INP. Since VDSL2 is specifically targeting to triple-play services, the ITU standard specifies a Dual Latency operation mode. Dual Latency provides improved QoS features by enabling simultaneous transport of applications with different physical layer requirements. For example, Dual Latency can be used to transport a video channel with a high INP while simultaneously transporting a voice channel with very low latency.

Yea 1ms is a lot better for gaming and throughput.

Also DLM-1 still has a target SNR of 12dB.

I would rather have the stable 45/10 connection that I have with DLM-2 than a bad connection with 17a or DLM-1. I would definitely not trade my connection for the 17a and DLM-1 cases in this thread.

But if I had to choose between an extra ~20mbit on a 17a profile or 7ms less latency on DLM-1, I think I would probably go with lower latency.

But I'm still pretty stoked with the step up from ADSL2+ and will continue to be, even if my connection remains as is on DLM-2 :)

You have to remember that the connection examples in this thread are out of the ordinary. Most people's connections are fine on DLM-1.

But has anyone actually managed to get onto DLM1 recently? Anecdotally it seems everyone who's on it has been for a while and a couple of you who had the misfortune to drop off it now can't get back on it? Or have a missed updates? :)

Nope, that's pretty much the gist of it... Even Napster with his virtually perfect line can't get back on DLM-1!

sidefx: @maxzzz: So it put you on DLM-1 after the SNR tweaking or the other way around? And you're still running it tweaked right? (I assume so from your screenshot)

I was put on DLM-1 before tweaking, then after I had tweaked the line I went back to DLM-2 for 8 days and then automatically back to DLM-1 and since it is very stable, I will leave it tweaked like this since I have got nearly 12Mbps increase in download speed while still having a very low latency for a DSL connection.

blair003: I'm no expert but I find maxzzz being on DLM-1 almost as strange as regan being on 17a.

maxzzz: do you know if you had a higher sync rate previously when you were on a more conservative DLM profile?

(I'm assuming you can sync at a higher rate if you have more error correction on the line)

When I used to be on a more conservative profile my synch rate was definitely lower than present, even with the increase of errors due to the lower noise margin I still have stable throughput with a jitter of 1ms.

This is exactly like when I used to be on ADSL2+, the lower the correction rate the higher the synch, but every line behaves differently.

Lol, it would be interesting to see if you can get a synch rates close to Napster's, but in 8b profile

I'm on DLM-1 but sadly only on the 8b profile with a 25Mbps sync. Only took one day to go from DLM-3 to DLM-1 and it hasn't changed since. I'm about 900m from the cabinet assuming the cables run straight down the road, and aren't running any filters or splitter and have POTS on the same line :)

I'm on a similar sync speed around 24.7 (best was 25.6) I'm assuming I was on DLM1 for a while on profile 8b as I had 1ms latency for about 3 days... now back to 8ms which is giving me a ping of around 19/20ms.

I'm 700 meters from the cabinet with POTs and Master filter.
