ok i snipped the old copper phone line, then plugged the orcon analog phone jack into a jack in the house.  All existing jackpoints in the house work again :)  Thanks for the help.

You may have just been able unplug the line from the "ADSL" jack and plug it into the "Phone" jack.

You'd be feeding the house via the ADSL splitter, but that should work ok, it would probably be best to snip the Black incoming pair so you're not feeding back out of your house...

One thing to also be aware of is the REN value of the ATA / RGW / IAD and the REN value of the phones you're using. Most ATA's have an REN of around 3, with a standard POTS line having an REN of around 5.

Every phone will either have the REN value listed on the Telepermit sticker or you'll be able to see this by looking it up at the Telepermit site. This used to be around 1.0 for a phone, but many are now well below this.

Exceed the REN value of your ATA and your phones won't ring, and you could also potentially damage your hardware.

office: RN=1
entrance: RN=0.5
guestroom: RN=1
kitchen: RN=1

total RN=3.5

Should I delete one of the phones to be safe?  Anyone know what the genius port can handle?  We tested a call and all phones rang.

I'll see if I can find out, I think it should be fine.  It certainly won't hurt the phones :)

just turn the ringer off on one of the phones, otherwise it's kind of like running a led at higher voltage - sure it'll show a brighter light for a while, but it'll burn out prematurely.

I would have thought that driving a dead short and other overloading situations would be expected for the output of any piece of telco gear.

If it fails from customers connecting too much or defective telephones then it is not really fit for purpose.

Not that I am expecting it to survive someone putting 240v into it, but I think it is reasonable to expect it to survive any misconnection that a customer might do, like plugging the ATA's output into a live phoneline etc.
