sbiddle: Those Mbps figures for 720p and 1080p are wildly inflated.

think they were testing how far it came down, and it's prebuffering so if you have a 20 megabit+ connnection it'll use over 20 megabit peak.

the data volume total is what really counts, but skipping between videos (the new channel hopping) will increase bandwidth consumption compared to just watching whole videos.

especially with music videos i find myself hopping a bit because some of them are low quality, or people have screwed up the video sound etc. although most of them are 240p to 480p.

Spend a few hours yesterday getting a smoothwall box setup.
Monumental pita. Didnt realize I'd need two NICs, and probably another wireless access point. So im going to get another NIC today (cant they virtualize the one NIC or something, this is 2013). The install process borked one of my hard drives, and refused to work with it, but anyway...

After trying to get some install support. Ive discovered that smoothwall perhap isnt the best option anymore. I read that IPcop or m0n0wall might be better?

Any suggestions on this?

For monitoring data and controlling usage I think Gargoyle beats out any Linux distro. I run pfSense at home mainly because I just like playing with it but I don't have quota controls or anything set up.
pfSense does a great job monitoring traffic but haven't seen any packages for quota controls. I guess you could build your own if you knew what you were doing.
I have read a bit about people doing quota controls on IPCop. I tried IPCop for a while but is fairly lack lustre compared to pfSense.

you may be able to do vlans on one nic. (that's basically nic virtualisation)

you can vlan to the wireless access point often too.

i don't have a genius, but my config goes something like:

adsl modem, wireless router, computer all bridged together.

dhcp router on computer, two interfaces on computer, one that takes "incoming" data off adsl modem, one that goes out to normal network. i'm not bandwidth accounting atm.

for simple monitoring you can use something called bandwidthd which i've used before. it's not wonderful, and things get complicated if you're also sharing data off the same computer (which i'm doing, and is one of the reasons i'm not accounting traffic)
