i has the same problem, i was a lot closer to the cabinet than my stats showed, it wasn't until chorus came and did some investigating and found i had an extra 280 metres of cable from the roadside to my house, it seems that when it was all installed my house ended up at the end of the loop around 5 houses and they just put my connection at the start and took out 280 metres of cable length and i went from 14000 to 17000 just like that on ADSL2

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Hi Michael,

When did you call into us as we can't see a record of it at this end. I've done a check on your line (via www.snap.net.nz) and you can indeed get VDSL2.

Our signup process will actually perform a Chorus check on your line and looks at the statistics based on the Chorus records of copper line length, its not 100% accurate, but in most cases it is quite definitive. (I realise you are an existing customer! but you can still use this form, we may include a notification in My Snap to show customers if they can get VDSL/UFB within the next couple of months)

If you are keen to move to VDSL let us know either here or via PM and we will arrange to upgrade you.

Behodar: DS is 26.5 from memory, but I'm at work and can't check US. I'm not sure what's "normal" for US though!

Hmm, I'm back back and DS has increased to 27 since I last looked. US is 13.5 which it seems is about right.

yeah your us/ds ratio is about normal. that attenuation is high though, are you over 10 megabit?

Thought I might post some update on my current situation:

I called Snap's help desk yesterday to see if theres anything they can do for me, they checked my line and said my attenuation was surprisingly high, and advised that I might actually get lower speed with VDSL. I also found out through a friend who works in another ISP that other people down in my street are getting low speed too, so I pointed that out and Snap lodged a fault with Chorus.

Today I called Snap again for Chorus update, they said there might be a deterioration of copper between the exchange, but the issue is not big enough to take any action. Basically they said I'm on my own now.

Is there anything else I can do? I mainly want VDSL just so I can stream HD with Apple TV and youtube.

How many streams and what is the issue when you try currently? Your current sync rate *should* in theory be more than enough but will depend on what else you or others in the house are doing online when you try.

'Might be'... sounds like a guess to me! I'd push to get a Chorus tech out there to actually take a look!

Just one stream with nothing else using youtube, I often get stutter with 720p and long buffer with 1080p on youtube. Last night apple tv was stuck on the spinning loading screen.
Edit: changing DNS to Telecom's DNS sever seems to have improved youtube a bit.

YouTube 720p is approximately 3 Mb/s, and presumably 1080 is about 6 Mb/s. You should absolutely not being getting long load times with a synch rate in excess of 15 Mb/s.

Tried one of those old Dynalink RTA1320 with 14200ish line rate. My phone doesn't seem to have any statics and I have a new Cat5 cable directly from my router to the splitter.

Your actual sync rate is not that bad so if there is slow speeds then it can't be the copper. What does a speed test say you peak at?

My sync speed is alright, but compared to a few years ago with Slingshot at 21mbps and last year with Snap at 18mbps this is pretty poor.

I just spoke with someone on Snap trying to get a tech sent over, they said the tech will pretty much charge me for a no fault found fee, and now that since my attenuation is so high I'm not even eligible for VDSL.
