Sorry, I didn't realise that a blank screen meant that the server was listening.

I get a blank screen for both gmail and slingshot on port 995.

Ok makes more sense now that telnet and Outlook are telling the same story.

You can connect port 995 to Slingshot and Google, but not to Xtra.

So ... not much point in changing the router?

Yes, correct (i.e. can connect to both Slingshot and Gmail on 995 but not Xtra).

Regarding router: yes, probably not much point. And yes, the new router did arrive 15 minutes ago and there is no change when using it.

Seeing as I've done what Slingshot suggested (i.e. change the router) I might try out this problem on the Slingshot forum, as well.

Haven't we just proved it is an Xtra problem?

Hold on a sec....

When you say you cannot get XTRA emails - is that emails from xtra users sent to your Slingshot account, or do you have an Xtra email account also that you are collecting mail from via your Slingshot connection?

In reply to Foiler: If it's an Xtra issue, why does the problem go away when I use my Vodem (and not Slingshot) to connect?

In reply to trig42: It's an Xtra email account that I use via a Slingshot connection (most of the time). It's worked fine for years.

The thing is you have all the ammunition you need to let Slingshot off and inform Xtra they have a problem. ie from your Slingshot account you can connect to Slingshot and Google on port 995, but not to Xtra.

Don't tell them it works from Vodafone, they might break that too ;)

If I was certain that the problem was limited to only my Xtra email, then yes, complaining to Xtra/Telecom might work. But I suspect they would just say it's an issue with my ISP.

AND (very importantly) it may not fix my ability to stay connected to a Battlefield 2 server.

I should probably also mention that I have a static IP supplied by Slingshot, which might make me a bit different to most of their customers.

Just tried to play Battlefield 2 using my Vodem. It works, but wouldn't recommend it... :(
